Here is the article I posted on the earlier thread from the New York times (2 pages). Interesting article although I should imagine that there will be many different opinions because the evidence is not conclusive either way. I think that is part of the problem.

Remember the debates about eating eggs (for everyone)?; it was good, then bad, then good again. People who appear to be the experts can't seem to make their mind up.

Personally I feel there's a difference between someone who is drinking heavily ie an alcoholic whilst pregnant and someone who is drinking in moderation ie the odd glass or a shandy.

Wasn't Guinness recommended for pregnant women at one stage, does anyone know whether this had any visible negative effects?

Well I had the odd Guinness when I was pregnant - partly because I could not get on with those iron tablets.

I don't think it did my son any harm! (He's never had problems with concentration or anything and he's bright enough!)

I drank the odd glass when I was pregnant with both of mine - lager or Guiness and black.

Anymore than the odd glass is a no no as far as I'm concerned, I find it distrubing to see pregnant women knocking back the drink without a care in the world, it makes me wonder what the babies life will be like once they arrive !!

"Make sure you are clear on what a unit of alcohol is. One to two units of alcohol, the weekly limit that NICE recommends pregnant women in their second and third trimesters stick to, is equivalent to half a pint of ordinary strength lager or a small glass of wine."

a unit of alchohol is
one of the following

1 single measure of spirits
1 small glass of sherry
1 small glass of wine
1/4 pint of strong beer, lager or cider
1/2 a pint of ordinary strength beer, lager or cider

I was given guiness or mackerson after the birth of my twins!
Edit, and I think I deserved it!!!

good site below has most drinks calculated

Can’t find your drink?

Work out your units for yourself with this handy sum: Strength (ABV) x Volume (ml) ÷ 1000 = No. of units

E.g. Pint of Stella - 5.2 x 568 ÷ 1000 = 2.95

Hi Red Rose:-)

Already been on that site but couldn't find shandy though. I suppose it's because it's not a full unit particularly if it's been heavily topped up with lemonade etc

Rambling

Rambling Report 31 May 2009 14:46

half pint of guiness would be 1.16 units
heinecken 1.42
standard glass Chardonnay 2.28
bottle bacardi breezer 3

You should have gone for the Sugar free lemonade Hayley :-)

Unless there's something in that too. It's really hard these days because there's so much additives etc in everything.
