Mo in Kent Report 30 May 2012 14:50

Hello me lovelies, what a glorious day again today, I bet poor Caz is perspiring buckets, bless her. (See Caz, I said perspiring, and not sweating buckets, like I would normally do, being a laydee today lol )

O.k Dejay, who's been talking....someones let the cat out of the bag about my painting, the walls that is. Just coz I made a few holes in the wall practising me darts, weeell, I thought we had woodworm, and had to do a bit of filling the holes first, then just had to cover up the mistakes with paint. lol.
Actually, I have been very good since last year, not touched a paint brush in a while, uhhhm perhaps I could get the energy up, but on second thoughts, im indoors would go loopy at me, if I got in front of his telly.

Ann, you are making me feel sooo guilty about not getting the garden sorted yet.
I have been good getting rid of the weeds, but once they were gone, the garden looked a bit bare. ;-)
Seriously, I have had to get rid of one of my rose bushes, as I think it was diseased. The leaves and the rose buds were turning white, and I did wonder if they were covered in white fly, but on closer inspection, there were no flies present.
So I got rid, as I dont want my other rose bushes infected.
I got rid of my Oriental Lilies last year, as they were covered in the Little Lily bugs. Cor they were a nuisance, as fast as I cleared them, they were back again.
I hope T didn't get out on the golf course today, as if your weather is anything like ours, it's swealtering outside, and he would fry out there bless him.

Huia, when your cousin did the tandem parachute jump, was it televised over here, only on our local T.V they showed an older lady doing a jump, I cant remember if it was last year or the year before.
She is such a young at heart person isn't she. She has definately got more get up and go, than I have. In fact my get up and go, went a long time ago.
Thank goodness she didn't do more damage than she did, bless her.
Your photo's on F.B are really lovely. The one with what looks like a hole in the ozone is spectacular.

Sylvia, I remember when you had the unwanted visitor in your cabin, but cant for the life of me remember what type of beasty it was.I believe it was the bushy tailed wood rat.
I presume you still have the cabin? Have you any intentions of going up there this year.
It can't be that long before you see young MJ now. He will seem like such a big boy now.
I can't believe how much our Lilly has grown, she is now 16 months old, so M.J must be coming up for two now.

Cor Marie, reading all your hobbies had me fair worn out. You are such an energetic person, with so many things on the go at one time.
I will send you some warm weather down the cyber hatch, I don't like to think of you as being cold honey.
We will have to get Linda to make you some fingerless gloves, to keep your hands warm.
It's no good me making them, as by the time they were finished they would fit a giant, and you are by no means that size.
How was your bit of Silver Side. That is my favourite cut of beef, and I now braise it, rather than roasting it. It always ended up like the leather you sole your shoes with otherwise. lol

Hi Lorraine, please send my congratulations to your kids on their completing the half marathon.
And good luck to your son this weekend.
They are a credit to you love, thinking of others rather than themselves, is a wonderful thing. Well done on their upbringing.

Caz, there is no such thing as"oldish lady" we are all young at heart, but our bodies let us down.
Mentally I am still 21, physically I am 101 lol.
I hope you are keeping cool sweetheart, I know how hot it gets in your flat.

Well it's time I did a Sallie, and get the kettle put on for our afternoon cuppa.
Would anyone like one.
(^^)? (^^)? (^^)? {_}/ {_}/ {_}/ biscuits @ @ @ @ @ @
See you later girls. love Mo xxx

I believe there is no allowance made

that is what a large part of the complaining is about it!

Often times a person is slow in making the adjustments to what is on the screen simply because they have difficulty finding which button or tab or side of the mouse to push ........ rather than the connection between seeing and doing as in real life.

That's what I meant by the "powers that be" ........ this test has been devised, it has been bought by the provincial government, and is being administered by the same group that devised it, and "Of course everyone is computer literate"

Our friend is computer literate, but not computer game literate ............ and I'm sure most older people are not the latter.

It's testing hand-eye coordination.

I do wish you could get rid of your rats!!

We solve the problem up in our cabin by putting down rat poison. I hate to do it, but they'd have a field day with the place empty for 5 or 6 months at a time.

and you can't do that if you have other animals around.

Of course the problem is what happens to the rats after they've eaten the poison ........... I hate to think of other animals dying because they ate the carcass.

Mind you, the ones we get up there are not the Norwegian rat, but the bushy-tailed wood rat (aka the pack rat) ......... I'm don't think they even belong to the same family as the rat that we get in the city.

Huia Report 29 May 2012 22:54

Sylvia, I wonder if the testers make allowances for people who have never used a computer before?

Huia

Huia Report 29 May 2012 22:53

I have just made brief notes of what I want to reply to.

Lorraine, I live in the country, with farmland on one side and 'bush' (what you call forest) everywhere else. The rats come inside for warmth in winter. I will always have that problem.

Sallie, I usually do only one afternoon a week in the shop, but today I am relieving another person in the afternoon, and somebody else tomorrow morning. I will have to get going soon as I want to visit the computer shop before lunch to eat humble pie if they have any.

dejay, I am 76 yrs young, and have been m for 53 yrs (if you can call the last 3 marriage with my OH in care). I have 2 children, 3 grandchildren, and 1 gt grandson.

Mo, I havent noticed any celebrations for the Queen's jubilee. We do celebrate Queen's birthday on Monday, so I wont be in the shop as it is a public holiday.

re falling down stairs, last night I had an email from my 2nd cousin in England. She is a bit older than I am. She had fallen down her stairs, but she didnt mention any broken bones, so I presume it was just bruising and being 'all shook up' . She is planning to kayak the length of the Trent river with somebody else to raise funds for a charity (Heroes?). She is learning to do an eskimo roll, and she is trying to learn to swim, something she has never done before. Watch your newspapers girls, for my intrepid cuzzy. She did a tandem parachute jump in NZ and enjoyed it so much she did another one back in England, and then abseiled down a building. I dont know if it was this thread or another that I had mentioned it on a day or 2 ago.

Must dash.

Huia.

Hi Mo

Yes T played golf yesterday but found it too hot and his back played up, probably due to the gardening the day before. Today we spent 3 hours doing the garden. Just one border to sort out now.

Mo in Kent Report 29 May 2012 19:08

Good evening girls, also any gentlemen who would like to join us in a good old chat about every day life.

Welcome to our little thread dejay, we are a friendly bunch, from many different places in the world.
We are all for supporting each other, whatever problems may arise, ( not that we are nosy, just caring ).
You are amongst friends in your card making, Ann,Sallie,Joyce,Caz and our founder member Jean, and many others are all great card makers.
Unfortunately, I am not amongst them, cack handed thats me, and the only things I can claim fame to is my darts.(though I am no expert, just do it for enjoyment)
Lorraine and Joyce also love the darts, so I have a great deal in common with them.
Both Linda and myself enjoy our knitting, but I have given it up for the time being, but Linda is very kind and knits for her local childrens hospital, especially premature babies.
I have been married to my husband for 48 years now, and we have five grown up children, twelve grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
We were married on February 29th 1964, so only have an anniversary once every four years.....( well thats what he indoors was hoping for, but didn't get lol )
Come back abd see us soon.

Sylvia, it's good to hear from you. It seems ages since we last spoke, but can understand the reason for your not being on here, sorting out all the family details does take time and energy, but is most important, or all the hard work could be lost to future generations.
Are you both attending the graduation ball again this year? And have you decided what to wear yet. I can remember us trying to decide what you should wear one year, and you decided on your long black skirt and an evening top. Well I hope I am right in what I am saying, coz don't forget, I have slept since then lol ;-) ;-)
How is your friend coping with her husband, since he has deteriated. Does she drive over from the Island now that he has lost his licence?
It's a good job they do do the tests really isn't it. A lot of people would scrape through though, even if their reactions are a lot slower than they should be.
I truly don't think Roly would pass his test this time around, if he had to sit it again.
He has developed so many bad habits, that a driving instructor would have forty fits sitting next to him.

Lorraine, how did the young ones get on in their half marathon. Were their feet killing them by the time they got home.
I bet your son was glad he was reminded about his toothbrush, what with having smelly feet after that lot, he didn't need bad breath to go with it. lol
How did you do at your stall this weekend. Will you be doing it this weekend as it's the Jubilee celebrations weekend isn't it.?

Ann, I nearly forgot about your Lake District holiday. Your holidays are so close to each other, that I get confused when you are either coming or going.
Has T been on the golf course in this lovely weather. I know you have both been very busy in your garden, I just wondered if he had sloped off without you knowing about it. lol

Sallie, your niece is very lucky not to have broken her neck, but bless her she has still got a lot of re-covering to do.
Roly has had a rotten sore throat, and flu like symptoms since we came back from our holiday, but I am soldiering on, doing my nursy bits ,ie making honey and hot lemon drinks, dosing out the paracetamol, and mopping the fevered brow ( mine, after all the running about )
I am truly shocked that I haven't dissappeared up my own rear end.
How are you feeling today my honey, is that black dog being chased away, I do hope so. Kick it up the backside, and into touch.

Huia love, it's just as well you are a bit hard of hearing, so you don't hear them there rats in their hobnail boots every night, keeping you awake.
I still say you are very brave coping as you do.
Have you seen Phil lately?. How does he seem to you love, is he still very distant when you visit him.
Are you celebrating the Queens Golden Jubilee over in N.Z. This country is, but we personally are not doing anything special.

Sending love and best wishes to all our friends who are not feeling up to par,Joyce, Caz, Liz.

Hugs for our Jean, when she looks in.....We miss you loads and loads Jean.

Bye for now everyone. Mo xxx

SylviaInCanada Report 29 May 2012 16:10

Hi Mo, and everyone

and a special hello to dejay .........
.... it's always nice to see a new person finding the thread.

Dejay ............ I was born in Lancashire, but now live in Canada. We left the UK in 1967 5 days after we got married, spent 1 year in Texas, then came up to Canada and have been here ever since. We're now both retired .......... although OH still has 2 offices out on campus, and spends almost as much time out there as when he was working! He does now only do what he wants to do!

We have 1 daughter and 1 grandson, but the little family lives on the other side of Canada, over 7,300 km (ca 4500 miles) away ............ because that's where her husband is from, and where they both have very good jobs.

Sorry I've been absent for several days. I've been spending quite a lot of time on trying to organise all the information I have on our various families ............. especially looking at the updated Probate records on ancestry (they're up to 1966 now), and the newspaper archives. I really must take out a sub to the newspaper one ....... I love reading old papers, whether they're relevant to me or not! :-D

We had several days of sun and nice warm weather, then it changed last Thursday, and has been a lot cooler, rainy, etc etc etc.

It changed just in time for the Graduation ceremonies ............... 23 ceremonies spread over 6 days starting last Wednesday and ending tomorrow. OH goes to every ceremony as he is the Student Marshall. The first day wasn't too bad................. but the others have not been as good as they might have been!!

Then, of course, Saturday was sunny and HOT ................... my dad would have said it was "s*d's law" :-D

We had dinner on Sunday with our best friends from the Island ......... they were over here for an event on Monday, so we met them at our favourite little bistro-type place near the hotel.

He was just a little bit worse ........... has now been forbidden to drive as he failed a test every one in the Province has to take when they turn 80. There has, in fact, been a lot of controversy about this test ........... it is largely computer-based and tests reflexes, etc............... rather like doing one of those computer games.

So many older people do not use computers, or are not computer literate OR game literate. Of course ......... the powers-that-be know better.

However, in this case, I think it a good result.

He went walkabout late one evening, ending up at a neighbour's, where he knocked on the window of a room where there was a light on. Fortunately, they know each other pretty well. BUT our friend did not recognise the other man or know his name....... just knew he needed help to get home.

Meanwhile, his wife had woken up and was going frantic trying to find him.

Imagine if he had done that in the car :-0

Love to everyone

Take care

Hello Dejay, welcome to this thread, tell us a bit about yourself. I, as you can see, live in Gloucestershire UK, am in my 70s and have been married to my lovely other half for nearly 52 years. We have 2 children and 5 Grandchildren.

Sallie, the garden is more or less done, although we have been out to the garden centre this morning so now have some more plants to put in. good to see you posting again, hope you are feeling a bit better and that the sun has helped. Yes we need another holiday but that is ok we soon got to the Lake District for a week.

Linda, still busy with those babies and expected baby. What colour is the blanket?

Puss the gammon was very nice and it was cooler by the time we ate it.

It is cloudy here today and a lot cooler, I even had a cardigan on this morning. :-)

Good morning girls,

Ooooh! all this talk of gammon, I really fancy some. I wish I had some in the fridge now but will have to wait until I go and do the weekly shop tomorrow.

Ann. nice to see you home from your holiday in Tenerife and glad to know that both you and T had a lovely relaxing time there. As you said, it's all the work that has to be done when you get home that spoils it. You now need another holiday to get over the last few days.lol!!

Huia, you are so brave sorting out all those rats, I know I wouldn't be able to do it. Are you still working a couple of days a week at the charity shop?

dejay, welcome to Mo's thread, it's nice to hear from you. Do you live in the UK? I've lived in SE Derbyshire, for 33 years but was born and brought up in S Wales.

Sylvia, hope both you and OH are alright. How is your little grandson these days? I expect he's running around and into things now, a typical toddler. Bless him.

Liz, how are things with you? I hope that you are feeling a bit better now.
Are you going to the Sheffield meet at the end of June? I'm not sure if I will be able to go yet, although I would like to go, just taking one day at a time for now.

Mo, how are things with both you and Roly? Hope you are both OK.

We heard from Alun's sister over the weekend telling us that her eldest daughter is in hospital after she fell downstairs from top to bottom, breaking her right leg in two places and smashing her ankle.
She was transfered from the hospital in West Yorkshire on Sunday to Hallam Hospital, Sheffield where she had a big operation on the leg yesterday, and she will have to have another operation again in a few days. Although we are all worried about her, but we just think that it could have been a lot worse, we don't want to think about what could have happened.

Caz, if you are looking in, just want to wish you and Phil a Very Happy Anniversary for today, It's also Jennie's 27th birthday today and my friend's birthday too, but she's a lot older than 27.lolol!!

Hope you are are feeling a bit better and more comfortable now. Pleased to hear the good results of your scans.....I'm sure it has set your mind at rest.

Puss, how are things with you? Hope you are feeling better now.

Have you made any more bracelets lately?

Well done to your son and daughter for the race at Sheffield on Sunday.

I heard from Joyce earlier on, she is suffering from gout and is in quite a bit of pain with it.

Marie, nice to see you posting again, hope we'll hear from you again soon

Linda, hope all is well with you and all your family. Are you still busy knitting for the expected new babies and for the baby unit at the hospital. Hope you've managed to find somewhere cheaper to buy your wool from.

Well, I need a drink now, it seems to have taken me ages to write this message, so will speak to you all soon.

Take care everyone.

Love and best wishes . Sallie.xxx
