A Wee Chuckle for the day.

The Sailor runs onto the bridge of the ship and begins to say......

'Sir, the, the , the , the ,' he stutters badly.

The Captain looks at him and says.

'Laddie, If you can't say it.,,,,,,, Sing it out '

The sailor sings it out........

'Should Auld Aquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind,
The Bosun's fallen overboard, he's half a mile behind'

AULD LANG SYNE

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And days o’ lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot
Sin’ auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl’t in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie’s a hand o’ thine,
And we’ll tak a right guid willie-waught
For auld lang syne!

And surely ye’ll be your pint’ stoup,
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
For auld lang syne!

English Translation

Times Gone By

Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintances be forgotten,
And days of long ago!

For times gone by, my dear
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.

We two have run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we have wandered many a weary foot
For times gone by.

We two have paddled (waded) in the stream
From noon until dinner time,
But seas between us broad have roared
Since times gone by.

And there is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we will take a goodwill drink (of ale)
For times gone by!

And surely you will pay for your pint,
And surely I will pay for mine!
And we will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by!

I know the one I prefer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morning All !

It's HOGMANAY !

'What the 'h' is that ?' says you.

A guid New Year to ane an` a` and mony may ye see!
While New Year's Eve is celebrated around the world, the Scots have a long rich heritage associated with this event - and have their own name for it, Hogmanay.

Not so long ago , and some folk still do it , the Scots would clean the house from top to bottom, especially the windows and the doorstep. The fireplace would be emptied of all the old ashes and a new fire prepared for lighting at midnight. All debts would be cleared ready for a fresh start in the New Year.
A veritable feast would be ready for visitors arriving, kith, kin and strangers were all welcome.
Your 'firstfoot' over the doorstep should preferably be 'dark' and handsome.
This goes back to the days when the 'fair' Vikings were not welcome visitors.
The 'firstfoot' would give you gifts of coal, blackbun , and whisky.
Celebrations would sometimes go on for days on end.
Sadly many of these traditions have died out.

Where does the name 'Hogmanay' come from ?

The Origins of Hogmanay

There are many theories about the derivation of the word "Hogmanay".
The Scandinavian word for the feast preceding Yule was "Hoggo-nott" while the Flemish words (many have come into Scots) "hoog min dag" means "great love day". Hogmanay could also be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon,' Haleg monath', Holy Month, or the Gaelic,' oge maidne ', new morning.
But the most likely source seems to be the French. "Homme est né" or "Man is born" while in France the last day of the year when gifts were exchanged was "aguillaneuf" while in Normandy presents given at that time were "hoguignetes".

Take your pick!

A load more useless information from me.

Whatever you're doing today and tonight.......have a great time.

I'll be at the Worlds biggest Street Party in Edinburgh , More hugs and kisses than I'll be able to handle ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

Have a good day ya all !

Keep well , keep safe , keep smiling :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

No not useless to me I always read up on Scottish History.
My Neice writes for a magazine named "Peoples Friend "she writes stories for them goes by the names of Kate McCallum and sometimes Kate Hardstaff.the Magazine carries lovely stories about Scotland and the history.Dunnottar Castle was a ruin if I remember rightly.?

The first time I went to Stone Haven was in 1971 when mother in Law moved back to bervie.Hamish had gone to watch football at Aberdeen he said if they won we would go to the Angus Steak house for our meal if they lost we would be going to the North Star Pub in Bervie.we went to the North Star Pub but Aberdeen won. we voted where we would eat and Bervie won. lol

Mother in Law gave me a Robbie Burns tankard. that year.

Stephen2009 Report 30 Dec 2011 19:53

Rita,

Dunnottar Castle and Kinneff Old Church have a prominent place in Scottish History.

When Oliver Cromwell was intent on beseiging Scotland in 1561 the Crown Jewels of Scotland were removed to Dunnottar Castle for safety. When Cromwell attacked the Castle the Regalia was smuggled out and hidden in
Kinneff Old Church where they remained buried for nine years.

They were then taken to Edinburgh Castle. Where they remain to this day.

Another piece of useless information from me.

Hi MO, hope your keeping well. ? Stephen you didnt get lost then ? I thought they might send a search party out for you.

I was reading an article today about Stone Haven my moher and father in law spent alot of time there, when we were in Bervie we use to drive to Stone Haven and sit at the harbour.listening to a brass Band.

I came across a piece about Robert Burns fancied trying his hand at catching his supper but he got caught by the laird instead. he high tailed it out of there, and then wrote a few lines to to the laird

"The fish are scarce, Your water's sma, There's my rod . And Robbies awa"
I thought it was so funny. I lost myself in the article which told the history of Stone Haven it brought back memories and Dunnottar Castle
they mentioned a place some of my ancestors lived Kinneff.

My fridge Freezer came this morning nothing in it yet, I had to let it run for four hours and I didnt go and get any food. will do that tomorrow. I am going to dinner at my sons at Camberly on Sunday, so will not have to cook that day/.

Evening All !

A grand walk , a bit wet , my cheeks are glowing from the wind chill.

Loads of fresh snow above 1500ft.

Beginning to realise I'm not a 35 year old fit young man , more like the 65 year old 'plodder' that I am.

A certain Poem came to mind .......thank you Tennyson

We are not now that strength
which in old days Moved earth and heaven;
that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Tea is almost ready......a welcome feast......relace the lost weight ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-

Hello everyone,
Just popping on to wish you,
A HAPPY,HEALTHY ,PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR ONE AND ALL.
Enjoy New Years eve, wether you be at home, or out for the evening.
I hope that you are all feeling fit and well after a joyous christmas.
I'm not, I am well and truly cream crackered. How can kids who arrive at 6 ish and are gone by 10.30 leave so much rubbish behind them lol.
My poor bin men didn't know what was waiting for them, when they came round on Wednesday morning, cor blimey there was enough rubbish to nearly fill the dust cart on our own ,let alone our neighbours trash.
Still it's over now, till next year.
I have started shopping for xmas 2012 already, thank goodness for the after christmas sales. The Christmas cards are all bought, and tomorrow I intend to buy the wrapping paper.
On that note, I will say cheers for now. Mo xxx
