LindainBerkshire1736004 Report 26 Jan 2012 22:28

Evening all
Regarding food prices do you all agree that it is the fresh veg, fruit and salads that cost so much now? Certainly that was the bulk of our shopping on Sunday when we got home and we eat much less meat, mainly chicken and fish as a rule.

Daughter came and she is well except for cramp and sleepless nights !!! She won't know what has hit her in 4 weeks time eh?

Wide awake now as I fell asleep earlier, my body clock is out of sync. Hope it gets back to normal soon

Sleep well my friends

George I know the little cafe you mean it is a Church Chairty one and I use to go in there with a young girl from the church I went to she was a Teacher at a school in Weybridge and moved up from Cornwall I was like a mum to her she took me everywhere.during the school holiday she met another teacher and they married and moved to Devon where he is head teacher. I passed that cafe today.

Sallie I use to make mince and onion pies I made my own pastry then but it is cheaper to buy the ready made pastry you can make nice pies and they work out cheaper. I even make conrish pastries.with mince and veg.

Pauline we would all be rich if we had the prices from the 1950 but you would have the wages with it and they were poor. MY husband was earning a single figure wage then and worked every bit of overtime he could to help with the househol;d expenses. many hours.

I earned £2.10 shillings a week when I started work in March 1944 and it cost me 6 pence fare to work and 6 pence back home. five days a week and every other saturday morning

It has started to get cold now. I am going to take a flask of tea to bed with me tonight still have my Horlicks before I go.

Rita

where is our Jean today ?

I am not ignoring you Shelly, a little one due is always a blessing. Doesn't matter whether they be boy or girl, they are sent from Heaven.
You will love the little mite regardless.

Rita, my friend and I were saying the same as you the other day, that our mums and grandmas seemed to use more veg than meat when we growing up in the 50's and early 60's and if we had a stew or a broth we always had bread to dip in it. Oh it was lovely.

We were looking at some meat pies while in A--a yesterday, they were asking for £1.54 for an individual pie, it just wasn't worth the money, so I didn't buy it. I'll have to go back to making them again as I did when the kids were at home.

I know a couple of families with young children and they are really struggling with the food prices.....I don't know how they are managing.

I'm going to make a cuppa now, so will speak to you soon.

Hope you are still managing to stay positive. Thinking about you and your son.

Hi all.

Haven't been around today, I watched the tennis (Australian Open) this morning and then went to visit my aunt this afternoon. It wasn't that cold at first but it's freezing now.

Where's Stephen today?

How are your legs today George?

Rita, I wouldn't mind if we had the same prices now as we had in 1950.

Sallie, I get the bulk of my shopping at Asda as well and I've noticed the prices are jumping up.

Linda, has your daughter picked any names yet?

Yes, I read your posts Shelly and yes, I remembered about the new baby. :-)

Marilyn, my diet didn't last long............... back to normal eating today, so it lasted 1 day. :-(

Wend, I noticed that Maddie was wearing black tights and white trainers last year but I thought she looked very fetching in them. :-) :-)

Hi Rita,

The last time I was in Knaphill I went with the old boy, we were going to Guildford and took a detour to Knaphill to get some coffee.
We stopped in a little cafe that I believe was a charity one, think it was near a bank :-) :-) mind you that was a couple of years ago :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Hi Sallie

I thought the same thing the shelves have food on them in our Waitrose but not many people were buying. mostly elderly people shopping today so maybe thats why. tomorrow when people get paid and the weekend people will spend I expect.?

It is like going back to the 1950 you look around for food that will go far and is cheap. although food was still rationed then. but I made lots of meals out mince. and beef cuts, stews with lots of dumplings my gran use to say belly fillers.they filled you up and we seemed to have more veg in our meals then and less meat I use to go to the bucher and ask him if he had any ham bones and they were lovely for making soups. they were called knuckles then and pigs trotters and hearts. I think a lot of families will start doing that.

It has started to get cold here. it wasnt too bad at 1 oclock but since then has got colder. still no snow yet we must be thankful for that. a long the garden hedge the daffs have started to come up and open they look lovely and maike you feel cheerful.

Sallie Report 26 Jan 2012 14:46

Rita, I sometimes wonder what we will all be able to afford to eat if the prices keep on going up as they are. We go to A--a every week, their prices have gone up a lot since last year and you can tell by the things that are left on the shelf that people just haven't got the money to buy them.

Funny sort of weather here today a mixture of bright skies, then cloudy, windy and cold. I slipped up to town, needed to go to the Post Office and to the bakers, wasn't there long and I was glad to get home.

Hazel, have you had your boiler fixed yet? I hope they have now sorted it out once and for all.

Hope you all enjoyed your lunch.....I love lamb, it's my favourite meat.
Oooh not long now before the birth of your first grandchild, I'm sure you're all getting excited.

Hello to all everyone else, hope you are all okay.

Take care,

Love, Sallie.xx

Morning

George if you didnt have to get up for anything special then dont blame you for having a lay in.

I didnt go to sleep till 3 oclock and was in bed at 10.30 I watched the TV awards had my Horlicks and went to bed. but I tossed and turned got up and sat reading till 3 oclock
.
I had to go to Knapphill this morning. the bus time table said next bus 7 mniutes so I sat down the bus was there . that 7 minutes went quickly.
I walked around Knapphill went into the bank into the cop-op and looked in one of the charity shops. The sky was so black and there was a mist all around. as I came out of the co-op the sun came out and I had to undo my coat it was that warm. I got off the bus and paid my paper bill. then went to get a loaf of bread from Waitrose I had forgotten it in the Co-op the bread had gone up from £1.14 to £1.32 I said to the manager can I put a deposit on this as I need to go and get a morgage out for it. he grinned elderly people were walking about not knowing what to buy as the food prices have rocketed . I cannot beleive they can put the prices up that high.
I met three of my neighbours all having a moan. I said go to the co-op they are alot cheaper with some of there food than this shop.

The sun is out at the moment I have a casserole in the oven. for my dinner.

have a good day

Daughter coming for lunch today she has 4 weeks to go Shelly, but we don't know whether it is a girl or a boy !!! Nobody minds as it is the first grandchild in both families, so long as it is healthy and Mum is OK afterwards doesn't matter.
They are having lamb shank today, I don't like lamb so will have chicken kiev with lots of veg and a jacket potato. No pudding maybe a WW yoghurt.

George that is a sign of old age when you repeat your words dont worry about it , it is when you answer yourself thats the time to worry.
so you had Hospital today?. hope things went alright with you.?

did you see all the people coming over from the continent and having hospital treatment free, even if your an illegal imigrant they showed you it all on TV this evening and they were not paying for that treatment . no wonder the hospital are having a difficult time.

Stephen I liked the verse for Robbie Burns Day, I was surprised it was not shown on google the Robbie Burns birth 25th Jan 1759 they show lots of other things but not this I wonder why that was. ?

Have a good night.

Thanks Marilyn, I enjoyed the cuppa, I really needed it because I've been out walking through the woods. Came back with mud up to my knees (well...... ankles), the ground is really soggy, we were just sinking into it.

I've decided not to change the type of food I eat (don't like any healthy food). I'm going to try and miss out lunch instead. We don't have our evening meal until about 8pm so it's a long wait............. but better than living on salads.

That looks like a nice photo Hazel.

Mo, she said it was going to be made into a little book so he could take it into hospital with him if he ever needed to go in. The day centre did a one for everybody a few years ago and they keep them there so any new staff can read them.
I think a few of Brent's school friends may have slipped through the net because their mothers refused to let them go to the day centre when they left school. Silly really because it's no different to school, it's just the same hours and they do the same things.

Rita, I couldn't help but laugh about you going to make a cup of tea when your computer went off. I hope everything's OK now. :-) :-)

I'm glad you translated that Stephen, I didn't understand a word of it. :-) :-)

Address to the Haggis

Standard English Translation

Fair full your honest, jolly face,
Great chieftain of the sausage race!
Above them all you take your place,
Stomach, tripe, or intestines:
Well are you worthy of a grace
As long as my arm.

The groaning trencher there you fill,
Your buttocks like a distant hill,
Your pin would help to mend a mill
In time of need,
While through your pores the dews distill
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour wipe,
And cut you up with ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like any ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm steaming, rich!
