I have a granddaughter named Eilidh.....which means 'light'. And she is certainly a bright spark LOL

Stephen, Huia is the Maori name of a native bird, now extinct :-( The latin name is heteralocha acutirostris. The tail feathers were highly prized by the Maori and worn as a sign of rank. The feathers were kept in a special carved box, called a waka Huia. Huia is pronounced hoo-ee-ah (more or less). One of the birds has a short tough beak for digging a hole in wood and the partner has a long curved one for reaching into the hole to find the huhu grubs. I think it is the male with the short beak and the female with the long one. But dont quote me on that!

Hi there Stephen. I have been enjoying working in the shop. You meet so many interesting people.
I am going to be raising money by getting sponsorship to have my hair shaved off, probably late Oct or early Nov. At least it will be warmer then. The temp here beside my computer is 13.5 deg Centigrade at present, despite the fact that it is now 9 am. The Hospice is busy setting up a website for fundraisers, called Angels for Hospice! so yesterday I bought myself a halo and a pair of wings for the Big Day. I will have a page of my own on the site. It will be calling for sponsorship. The marketing manager is at present on holiday and I have been waiting for her to come back to help me with posters etc. I hope the site will be up and running soon.

I am champing at the bit to get on with my fundraising and head shave. Some people say I am mad, but while people say a woman's hair is her crowning glory, I believe that she can have the most beautiful hair but if she is a sulky looking thing or is otherwise grumpy she is not beautiful. The crowning glory is the personality of a person and if she has a lovely personality and her hair is a mess nobody will notice the hair.

Like you I do a fair bit of ''charitable'' work and get caught up in all kinds of things.
I enjoy doing it and many of those I come in contact with really do appreciate what we do.

Things are rapidly heading for Autumn here, the first of the gales has arrived. Gusting 65mph.

Good evening, Stephen. I have just finished my breakfast and am reading 'my threads'. I have been out every day this week, going in to the Hospice shop even when I am not rostered, as we have a half price sale and it has been busy a lot of the time. I did take one day off to visit my gt grandson in Hamilton, but as I got back at 2.30 I went in to see if they needed help in the shop. Next week will be our last week in that shop, then a party on the Saturday to say goodbye to it.

Morning all
Bit dull here to start. Was hoping to go out with our daughter and grandson to Polesden Lacey(NT) this morning. But as it is a fair drive and looks like rain, might delay it. Still our daughter will be here later and we can spend some time together anyway. Still knitting for the new baby too, but he isn't showing any signs of coming early !!! Due date 17th.
Hoping Rita is feeling stronger today.
Jean you are so upbeat, I admire you for your strength.
Pauline thanks for the "funnies", I hope your back is giving you less problems and it continues to improve.

A Wee Chuckle for the day

A biology teacher wished to demonstrate to his students the harmful effects of alcohol on living organisms.

For his experiment, he showed them a beaker with pond water in which there was a thriving civilization of worms.

When he added some alcohol into the beaker the worms doubled-up and died.

"Now," he said,” what do you learn from this?"

An eager student gave his answer.

"Well the answer is obvious," he said " if you drink alcohol, you'll never have worms."
