Stephen, Huia is the Maori name of a native bird, now extinct :-( The latin name is heteralocha acutirostris. The tail feathers were highly prized by the Maori and worn as a sign of rank. The feathers were kept in a special carved box, called a waka Huia. Huia is pronounced hoo-ee-ah (more or less). One of the birds has a short tough beak for digging a hole in wood and the partner has a long curved one for reaching into the hole to find the huhu grubs. I think it is the male with the short beak and the female with the long one. But dont quote me on that! |

Good evening, Stephen. I have just finished my breakfast and am reading 'my threads'. I have been out every day this week, going in to the Hospice shop even when I am not rostered, as we have a half price sale and it has been busy a lot of the time. I did take one day off to visit my gt grandson in Hamilton, but as I got back at 2.30 I went in to see if they needed help in the shop. Next week will be our last week in that shop, then a party on the Saturday to say goodbye to it. |
