I loved Steve M in 'Papillon'. Another film which I've watched a number of times.

Papillion and Great Escape must be amongst Steve McQueens finest films........ though he starred in many more....can`t believe it was 29 years ago he died, as you say Pam....so young..... those steely blue eyes and impish grin....they don`t make them like him anymore..........

Was he in the USMC before films ?

I believe he was in the Marines - was pretty good at getting into scrapes then and being known as a rebel (not unlike James Dean).

I mentioned Bullitt because he did a lot of his stunts in it.

I actually think the first time I saw him was in Baby the Rain Must Fall believe it was a black and white movie.

Can't say I saw all his movies.
Did see all of James Deans though - mind you there were only three.
But they were all goodies.

You're right. There's enough horror each day in the news.
Does life imitate the films, or vice verca ?

I think life does immitate a lot of the very violent films that are made todasy, it's just awful.

The old fashioned horror films seemed pretty harmless from years ago, but today some people do copy some of these dreadful films that are made. It certainly gives them ideas i think.

Can't imagine any one other than Kirk Douglas as SPARTACUS brilliant film

The TV series Moonligting was very popular and made stars of Cybil Shepherd and Bruce Willis

Must agree David.....absolutely loved Moonlighting.............. the will they, won`t they, between Maddie and David was brilliantly done, and kept veiwers gripped for ages,however I felt it lost its edge once they did finally get together......ho hum, but set Bruce Willis up on the road to stardom.

Hello old and new friends on Pam's thread!

Yes I am back with a vengence. Been getting my teeth into the new job and felt I had to put the PC aside for a while to get into the rhythm of work; besides I look at them all day and sometimes you need a break ...

Tried to read all of the posts that I've missed but there's far too many so I'm not going to attempt to!

So I'll start afresh and list some classics that I love:

Angels WIth Dirty Faces starring James Cagney - always rated it as one of the best gangster films of the era and one of his best overall. His portrayal of Rocky Sullivan was electrifying (sorry couldn't resist it!)

Paths of Glory. Think I've mentioned this film many posts ago. Starring Kirk Douglas as a French Colonel in the Great War, it's more of a courtroom drama than a war film, but centres around Colonel Dax's attempt to save the lives of three of his soldiers who are picked by lots to stand at a Courts Martial charged with cowardice as the regiment failed to take the German position known as "The Ant Hill". It was Stanley Kubrick's first film and won several awards.

The Poseidon Adventure - not the remake but the original. Always had the hots for Carol Lynley as the hysterical singer Nonnie. Think I was 9 when it came out and she was my first crush ...

Went and saw a really strange film a couple of weeks ago with my girls. It was called "Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus" and was written and directed by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame.

Won't go into it too much here but it's basically a story about an immortal monk - played by Christopher Plummer - who is in a time long battle with the Devil to save the souls of people. It was, in fact, Heath Ledger's last film and he passed away before they had the chance to complete the special effects. So they - cleverly I think - used different actors every time his character entered the Imaginarium - Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law all played the character.

The whole thing was as mad as a box of frogs and some of it was quite dark and disturbing. The censors gave it a 12A, meaning that under 12's can go provided they are accompanied by a parent, but I think it maybe should have been a 15. Maybe I'm a bit of an old fuddy-duddy.

I think the best thing Michael Douglas ever did was produce or was it direct One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

He probably thinks the best thing he ever did was marry Catherine Zeta Jones - it certainly transformed her from a "Darling Bud(s) of May" to
the razz ma tazz and all that Jazz.

Hi All......and Ed, great to see your back, glad everythings going OK with the new job.

Havn`t seen Dr Parnassus yet, but it is still doing the rounds so will try and catch it, OH was quite keen!!

Like the look of 2 new films this weekend......... 2012, looks a bit like The Day after Tommorow which I loved, and should only be seen on the big screen to get full affect, so don`t wait for the DVD, and the new Michael Caine film Charlie Brown which has great reveiws.....

Elizabeth..thanks for confirming the David/Maddie moment, it really was great TV at the time......
