Ah ... 'Born on the 4th July', I think that has to be Cruise's best performance. Wan't it based on a vet's real life experience?

You'll have to bear with me - I'm not the quickest of typists and I'm half watching 'The Mummy Returns' on ITV2+1 in the background (only because the scrummy Rachel Weisz is in it!) I preferred the first film in the Mummy series (haven't seen the third which came out last year I think?) - I don't think sequels work very often - do you?

Hi folks, so glad to see that the circle of people on the thread is getting bigger!!

Mau, I've been told that you do a movie quize...look forward to it. You must let me know when the next one is please. I totally agree with you about Ryans Daughter...I remember going to see it with a friend, wasn't old enough, but managed to get in, oh that Christopher Jones! Also Goodfellas. Also love any Mike Leigh films, secrets and Lies with the exellent Brenda Blethan.

Edd, think we'll have to call you Barry Norman from now on, you're so knowlegable.

Nicky.... russian roulette..."But I like the orange ones!" ☺

Hi Ophelia,
Withnail and I , I'd forgotton that one with Richard E. Grant on top form. Exellent choice!!

I liked it when Christopher Jones (Ryan's Daughter) kissed her in the pub, and then when they all came back they had to act all normal and calm. If only she hadn't been too hasty in marrying boring old Robert Mitchum...lol ! ☺ ☺☺

Alison Steadman was once married to Mike Leigh I think. His films have some of my favourite actors in them, Timothy Spall being another good one. They seem so down to earth don't they.

yes....even at 11yrs old I quite fancied The lead male..Is that his name?...I thought the scene in the marital bed...(when she married..Mitcham..)..realistic..I watched it as an adult..it was intersting to compare my thoughts on it...Sad ending though..Horrid when they cut off all her hair..

Yes Christopher Jones, he was an American chap and I think that he had to have his voice dubbed as he had a strong American accent, although he didn't say a lot did he. Apparantly he had been romanticly linked to Sharon Tate the lovely actress who was so brutally murdered by Charles Manson and his evil mob. She was married to Roman Polanski at the time and was heavily pregnant at the time she was murdered, awful, just awful. Anyway they say that Chris Jones was still reeling from her death whilst making the film. Such a handsome man. He still looks very easy on the eye...go on Ophelia, Google him, you know you want too!!!! lol ☺

Hah - just spotted a bit of Tarantino is on! From Dusk til Dawn with George Clooney is starting in ten minutes on Channel 4+1.

No doubt I'll do my usual thing and say "I'll only watch a bit of it" and wind up bleary-eyed at half past two as the final credits go up ...

Thankfully I've got tomorrow (sorry today) off work.

No I didn't know that, he was good in that film...the name of which escapes me (had a long shift today!) where his wife dies after giving birth to a baby girl and he falls in love with his 'nanny'. Really nice film. Think the baby was named Sarah, could be the film title too actually.

Yes it was very funny Withnail and I.

Yes I know what you mean Edd, I'm off tomorow. Prefere 'Desperado' rather than 'From Dusk til Dawn'...purely 'cos it's got Antonio Banderas in it and I really fancy him...yes I know that is very shallow!!!

Off to bed in a while so speak to you all again soon I hope.

Antonio Banderas - what did you think of him in the Zorro films? I thought they were quite good myself; they need to make more good old swashbuckling action adventure films nowadays.

I quite liked Catherine Zeta-Jones in them too ...

☼ Pam ☼ Report 7 Jan 2009 00:48

I thought he was very good in Zorro, also exellent in Assassins. He's good in everything Edd!!

Did you ever see The 13th Warrior in which Banderas plays an Arab courtier who joins forces with some Vikings to fight the Wendol - a tribe of subterranean beings who capture and devour the people in the viking's settlement?

It was based on the Michael Crichton novel "Eaters of the Dead" and I think the main character is actually based on an Arab emissary from the 10th Century.

hi ed..... wonder if your around this morning yet? if you stayed up to watch dusk till dawn!!! I found tt a really weird film, and Tarantino is so creepy in it!!, I was quite glad when his charecter was killed off....... agree with the suquels never quite matching the original , JAWS being a prime example and Die Hard, another, loved the 1st one, have watched it over and over, the others never quite matched up, but think the brilliant Alan Rickman probably added to the success of the 1st, as for Mummy/ Mummy Returns , not really my cup of tea....another of OH`s favourites .....probably due to Rachel Weizz as well!!

Born on the 4th of July, was based on a true story, it was awful the way those poor injured war heroes were neglected once back home..... yes definetly one of Tom Cruises best performances, though he was very good in the Mission Impossible trilogy as well......

Love this thread Pam....am looking forward to the film quiz as well, I don`t very often venture on to general, but have thoroughly enjoyed this thread.
