Hi Tony, Thanks for all that info. Most of it I had, marr to Mary ann at St.John's Church, Parramatta -Mary ann was from Parramatta Factory. also had info from 1828 census. Thomas is my gggg.grandfather, and his 4 daughters don't have Mary Ann as mother - she disappeared off the face of the earth, and the girls mother is listed as Eliza in 1831 for my ancestor, Louisa, and as Elizabeth for the other 3 girls -twins Rachel and Mary Ann and Lavinia. I will get onto the nat.archives site and see what I can find. Thanks again,. Cheers, June (BB)

Evening......:>))
Beautiful sunny Autumn day in Melbin today.
Hi June.
Just checking through what links i have, for your Thomas WENNER. It appears his surname ( or Spelling of ) was tossed around a bit through the years on the Aussie record index's.
WENNER, WENNEY, WENNY.
Regarding your question about where do you go to find details of his trial ect,........Because he appears to have done his time in N.S.W ( rather than Tasmania )........your best bet would be to contact the N.S.W State Archive office.
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/indexes_online_3357.asp
Most Convict ships arriving in Ozzie had an on-board Surgeon. These surgeons ( apart from medical ) also wrote up the reports on convicts arriving and behavioral/conduct patterns on board, or on arrival to the Colony ( Surgeons Report ) These reports are kept at the various State Archives...if they were written and archived. Tasmania Penal Colony kept very good convict records/reports and journal convict log books.
Many of these surgeons reports have vital information regarding, where and when the convict was tried/convicted and sentenced. Some have relatives names on them ( Parents, Siblings ) as did Barbs G, G, Convict grandfather....1842 .It supplied his sisters and mothers names as next of Kin ..as he was only a 14 year old lad on arrival to Tas..
As for where your Thomas WENNER was tried and convicted you would possibly need to visit the N.S.W Archives, as it appears this is where he did his time ( N.S.W ) and see if a arrival or conduct report was made out. It may hold many clues.?...or none.
Not sure how much information you have on your Thomas WENNEY, but i have found these browzing the State Archives and checking it against my 1828 cd Census. and N.S.W.bdm's on-line. There seems to be a bit of info there....and quite possible the actual Fiche or Micro Reels hold extra info.

Hi Everyone. Tony, you are indeed a genius. I am completely confused with all those sites. I have a convict ancestor, arrived Sydney 1820 on 'Coramandel' -his name was Thomas Wenny or Wenner. Where do I go to find details of his trial and sentencing, and maybe some more details of where he was born etc. Hope you can help. Cheers, June in Batemans Bay

Good morning all you lovely people ,and a very good morning it is. I opened the blinds a good while ago ,and looking south to Durham, and north to Northumberland i could see the moors and hills with the gorse and heather though the mist [i could almost smell the clean air, enough to bring a lump to the throat of any miss placed scot. We had a load of rain yesterday which has done the ground a lot of good, and refilled my water butts. More rain is expected today clearing this afternoon which may open the window to the first b B Q of the season.Freds ghast has been well and truly flabbered this mornin', he opens up the puter lid, turns on and boots up,what's the first thing that comes up? bet you can't guess, and that will teach me to open explorer with all the adverts instead of chrome.there it is ,in all it's glory grrrrrrr, the fist advert for Christmas,in May?lol,i had to look twice ,i couldn't belieeeeeeeve it[victor Meldrew impression ]. Hiya Mary me old mucker, just in case you do decide to visit your holiday chalet ,AND fancy a few days on the moors in the van,we have made arrangements to have it updated, one new toilet fitted that you access through a hatch in the outside wall of the van to clean out ,so ,no more taking it out through the van itself ,and much more hygenic methinks. We are having the whole floor injected with resin too ,which will stop it ever going soft a couple of years down the line We found a fella that works in a caravan place who will do it on the side for us,all in plus parts and fitting for £500 not at all bad for the new luxury van he he. We even found a waste water container on wheels at a boot sale for a fiver,so we will have all mod cons ,for a laid back holiday, with a 14" by 10" barrel b b q that folds up and goes into the gas cupboard on the front ,froe al fresco nosh he he. Talkin' of the B B Qs,if the weather breaks this afternoon i may well fire up the one on the patio and do a chop ,and some snags to go with a salad . Hope you are all having a great weekend where ever you are,Fred.

Hi Alison.
Unfortunatley, i cannot look at the details as to what is written on the actual death certificate....unless i order and pay for it. This like many certs we order , are a hit and miss, as to how much information was put down on his Death cert. ( Parents ) as they are only as good as the information supplied at the time of his death, and how much the informant knew about the deceased. There was no extra info on my cd's to say whom his parents were.
Ordering a death cert would/should perhaps give a spouse name and/or children........... if he re-married.? Also perhaps his parents names, if anyone knew whom his parents were. This was always a problem with many convicts, as they came alone.... some re-married...( even with a wife and children back in the U.K ) .....and or stayed single and died alone.
Tasmania death cert's can be ordered from:
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/bdm/
Your friends best bet would be to see if she can find the place or records office/County in which he was tried.....and it looks like, from the info ( below ) it was Hertfordshire. It may give extra info about his trial in the U.K.?
Some added information on William WALKER which might help in her quest.
Ship: Theresa One voyage only Male convicts on board Departure Port: London Departure Date: 01 Apr 1845 Arrival Port: Hobart Arrival Date: 03 / 04 Jul 1845
Convicts landed: 200 / 220

Sources: Archives Office of Tasmania, Guide to Convict Records by Ship Reference.

Tony, what a legend you are. The William Walker my email friend is after is the one who arrived on the Theresa near the bottom of your list. As for the list of deaths, the most likely would be:
WALKER WILLIAM Death Male SORELL 26-Aug 1888 Age:78 1888 Ref:752 ...35
If it helps, his parents were Thomas Walker and Hannah Hooper or Cooper. Are you able to look in more depth at the certificate to see if this is him? Also if you can find out if it is actually him, could you tell me the address that my contact can email with the registration details so that she can order the certificate? Hope that wan't too confusing.
I quite like convicts too.Had a few on my Dad's side of the family and a few on my Husband's side. One was a highwayman, sounds dahing but he was probably just a thug. Still very interesting looking into them.
Regards, Alison

Tony,
What a star you are. I am going to look for the info on the person I need in Tasmania. I know his name was William Walker but I think I might have a few other details too. I am going to print off all the links you posted. A lot of them I have used before and will use again, some I've never heard of but will enjoy looking through. I still regard myself as a bit of a novice but I don't do too badly and I love doing family history stuff. As soon as I get more details I'll post them. One thing though with this possible Tasmanian death certificate. If there is one, does that mean it will have a reference number and the lady in England who wants it will be able to order it herself on line?

Good mornin' all from Newcastle o t where the old git Fred has been up since five a m,got the garden watered ,seen to the greenhouse ,took the wife her cuppa up ,and saw to my brekkie , sardines on toast. Moring to tone's ,cor ,eck mate ,you sure your grandads wasn't a digger in the true sense of the word? seing as you are such a mine of information [pun intended]. I could do with someone like you over here to help in MY research he he,so far still going slowly what with checking in Britain ,Ireland Canada ,and oz ,i don't know where to turn first ,lol. I sent Hoover an email yesterday Mary ,tongue in cheek complaining that my hoover broke down after only twelve years .he he,and said i had had to order a new one,got a nice reply from them too,who says firms have no sense of humour anymore . I reckon the new one should be here within the fortnight ,but until then ,weeeeell, the sons machine will have to cope with the extra load . I have to remember today to take a piccie in Macro for Our maid of honour at Seans wedding, seing as it's her that nicked to orange off the tree through the fence at the roadside in cyprus, lol, i bought six pips from said orange home with me and one struck. I now have a lovely little orange bush sitting in the greenhouse ,and intend looking up on the net to find out what the ideal growing medium is for good growth. it should be big enough in two years to go out on the patio in a big urn between the apple and plum trees. Looks a bit cloudy here this morning ,but after the lovely day yesterday ,and the suntan i picked up while working ,and lazing about in the gardens ,i ain't gonn'a complain. Must shoot off now and get some work done, have a great week everyone ,Fred

CONVICT LINKS:
A PENAL COLONY.
N.S.W ( New South Wales ) In 1788, the eleven ships of the First Fleet landed their 'cargo' of around 780 British convicts at Botany Bay in New South Wales. Two more convict fleets arrived in 1790 and 1791, and the first free settlers arrived in 1793. From 1788 to 1823, the Colony of New South Wales was officially a penal colony comprised mainly of convicts, marines and the wives of the marines.
The early convicts were all sent to Botany Bay, but by the early 1800s they were also being sent directly to destinations such as Norfolk Island, Van Diemen's Land,(Tasmania ) Port Macquarie and Moreton Bay.
Twenty per cent of these first convicts were women. The majority of women convicts, and many free women seeking employment, were sent to the 'female factories' as unassigned women. The female factories were originally profit-making textile factories. The Parramatta Factory grew as an enclave for pregnant women and also served as an orphanage from the 1830s.
While the vast majority of the convicts to Australia were English (70%), Irish (24%) or Scottish (5%), the convict population had a multicultural flavour. Some convicts had been sent from various British outposts such as India and Canada. There were also Maoris from New Zealand, Chinese from Hong Kong and slaves from the Caribbean.
TASMANIA: The colony of Van Diemen's Land was established in its own right in 1825 and officially became known as Tasmania in 1856. In the 50 years from 1803-1853 around 75,000 convicts were transported to Tasmania. By 1835 there were over 800 convicts working in chain-gangs at the infamous Port Arthur penal station, which operated between 1830 and 1877.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA: Western Australia was established in 1827 and proclaimed a British penal settlement in 1849 with the first convicts arrived in 1850. Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth, became the colony's convict settlement in 1838 and was used for local colonial offenders.
VICTORIA: In 1851 Victoria (Port Phillip District) separated from New South Wales. Apart from the early attempts at settlement, the only convicts sent directly to Victoria from Britain were about 1,750 convicts known as the 'Exiles'. They arrived between 1844 and 1849. They were also referred to as the 'Pentonvillians' because most of them came from Pentonville Probationary Prison in England.
QUEENSLAND: In 1859 Queensland separated from New South Wales. In 1824, the penal colony at Redcliffe was established by Lieutenant John Oxley. Known as the Moreton Bay Settlement, it later moved to the site now called Brisbane. The main inhabitants of 'Brisbane Town', as it was known, were the convicts of the Moreton Bay Penal Station until it was closed in 1839. Around 2,280 convicts were sent to the settlement in those fifteen years.
The last shipment of convicts disembarked in Western Australia in 1868, ...'Hougoumont' On January 9, 1868, Australia's last convict ship.
