I've just looked him up as well. It says his acting persona was with a Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire accent.

On the subject of dialect..........I happened to catch a TV programme some months ago about a German experiment back in ww1.........they had recorded the voices of hundreds of English prisoners of war.

The recordings have survived all this time where as , sadly the dialects have not.

I wish I could remember what the programme was called as it was most interesting.

Oddly enough I was asked today if I was from London ( I live in Norfolk ) I was only 4 when I moved here but apparently the accent is still detectable....lol

Yes , Winterwitch , I saw those films and found them amazing. To think they were nearly chucked away !!
I was astounded at the amount of advertising on bill boards , buses/trams , buildings etc.

I love programmes about the past and how things used to be , it really helps to put one in touch with how our ancestors lives used to be.

Round where I live we call a wopse a jasper.

(wopse =wasp for those who don't speak Zummerzet).

"Where's he to?" means "Where is he?"

"If I'd a-know'd I 'ooden never a-went" means "Had I known I wouldn't have gone."

I hear quite a lot of dialect round here. I've been told I have a slight West Country accent when I meet friends from other places. My daughter in Yorkshire gets teased about hers. She gets quite broad Zummerzet when she has a couple of drinks! LOL
