Oh Joy you lucky,lucky thing!! I would just love to have love letters my parents had written to each other during the war.
What a legacy for the family!! and mam's wedding dress too?

Please read them,...start slowly and after one or two I bet you're 'hooked' :O)

After my Mum died 11 years ago I was sorting out her papers before the funeral. I found all the letters that my Dad (who had died 10 years previously) had ever written to her. I didn't read any of them. Instead I put them in her coffin with her, thinking that they were her letters and if she'd wanted me to read them she would have shown them to me.

Sometimes I do regret not reading them, but I did what I thought was best at the time. I hadn't started researching my tree back then so I didn't think about whether there was family history stuff in them.

You could well be right, she would probably read them and say AHHHH i didn't know my dad had it in him .BUT I still want to keep these as OURS.#
Maybe ,when we are long gone she may find some comfort in them tho and find her another side to her parents.#
I guess we cant imagine our parents having a loving personal life

Joy, please read them, or at least let someone read them for you. Mum had a tin of love letters from my dad in a toffee tin in her wardrobe for years. Sadly she got rid of them, probably when they moved house. I used to peep at them when I was young, but never dared to read them. How I wish now that I had done.

Shirley if your daughter read the letter she would know how much love you had for each other as you say he isnt a romantic so they were unexpected. maybe thats how your daughter sees her dad so this would be a refreshing eye opener

you read them love and enjoy all the love your mum and dad had for eachother.
Just keep in mind that they were young and in love at the time.. and perhaps not yet your mum and dad. ;-0)

My first thought was to read them BUT then I dug deeper and my thoughts now that these were private thoughts between the two and really meant for their eyes only.
I have two letters my hubby sent me in hospital in 1958 when our daughter was born.Due to his shift patterns he couldn't visit some evenings so my mum and then my dad visited me . at that time was only one visitor allowed, OH gave the letters to mum & dad to deliver to me and those letters are so precious cos he isnt a romantic so they were unexpected. I was overcome with love for him when I read them ,and altho there is NOTHING untoward in them ,they are mine & his & I wouldn't want anyone else ,including our daughter, to read them.

So I would say keep them but dont read.

GOING DURING A WAR

In my garage, I have all my uncle's personal papers and loads of his books.

My dad, his brother, doesn't want me to go through the stuff, so at the moment, I am respecting that.

But the stuff half fills my garage.... and I am afraid to say to my dad come and fetch them, in case he gets rid (he did when he cleared my nan's house after she died).

I am hoping that in amongst all of that stuff, I will come across letters or something from my nan.

Joy, I do understand where you are coming from.... but what a wonderful gift you have there.

It is bound to be emotional... but it will so bring them to life for you.

I really dont know how you have not read them already ....I would have read them ....Coz I couldnt have put them in the bin without knowing what they say ...

Aww Joy what a treasure. You should read them, and get an insight into their lives and the people they were back then.

My mum showed me some letters from my Dads mum in the run-up to their marriage. About 15 of them. I never knew her, she died shortly after they married. I could have cried to have got just a little peak into her personality from those letters, then laughed,because I can hear myself saying the same things about my own son!

You read them hun, and enjoy. And preserve them in a safe place in acid free folders too. You lucky lucky thing.
