I think if they are supervised it will be fine.

But..........................*whispers.....I shot my brother with one when I was about 13:((((

Him holding the target while I aimed at it was probably not the best idea we ever had.

He was only bruised thank goodness, but boy were we in trouble.

Hi Kim,

I would say you know your son and how responsible he is better than anyone else.

If he's going to learn how to use it properly and under supervision as you've described, then I would say yes I would definitely let mine (when they're 16)

But not surprised he was in for it for buying it without permission :o)

Lots of love,

Phew ... OH is dead against guns , he hit the roof !!
My Mums family were all brought up with guns . So I,m once again in the middle LOL..
Thank you to everyone who has replied so far.
As I understand it the law says that anyone over 14 can buy and own an air gun , no license is required .
I know for a fact that you can double spring an air rifle .
But I also think that if my son is so intent on learning how to shoot , then he should be allowed to but just like his first 50 cc bike , learn how to do it responsibly ..

with PROPER training the use of an air weapon can be rewarding,
air weapons are an olympic discipline.......
it takes great skill to hit the head of a pin(thats the size of an air-rifle bullseye ) at 10 metres STANDING!!

I remember sneaking my first air rifle into the house! What a hammering I got, lol

But the lessons I learned with an air rifle stood me in good stead for my whole life.

Thanks .. son has bought one off the internet without permission , OH has gone nuts .. my thoughts are that if he wants to learn to shoot he learns to do it responsibly and under supervision . Son is banned from using it at the moment .
It,s only cheap and not powerful , but I live in the country and I was taught how to use a gun ...
Have told him that if he wants to continue .. ie shoot rabbits etc with a proper gun once he is responsible, it means a clean kill , anything he kills must be edible , he will then have to butcher it and then cook it ...

Eldests boyfriends and mates go shooting but they are all responsible and they are only 16 and as far as I know have gone for a while presuming at first with adults.

If its with responsible adults and they are responsible lads then I would allow it

Yes, if properly supervised, my 17 year old has one but is only allowed to use it in certain places when supervised.

Yes and my son does have and use a gun

but

it is locked away untill he is taken to an organised shoot where a responsible adult teaches him how to use a gun in a safe and respectful manner.

my 12 year old daughter has one. OH & I have a gun licence, the guns are kept in a locked cupboard and only I have access to the keys. We have a friend who owns a rifle range and the guns are only used there under adult supervision. Although I have other kids she is the only one interested in this.

Just got your last post.

Yes, let him go. Its a great way to teach youngsters discipline. Far better than hanging round street corners or being tempted to mix with the wrong sorts.

I've had air rifles since I was old enough to walk .......

:-)

Ray Report 23 Jul 2008 18:15

Now theres a deadly mixture
teenagers and air rifles lol
I had one when I was 16 but
me dad quickly made it disappear
no he was not a magician
but probably stopped me getting,
into trouble.

Maybe if only allowed to use it under extreme supervision but would still be wary and it would have to be under lock and key at all other times and would make sure he didn't use it enroute to the club.

Err no.

My son was lent one at a younger age than that and I went crazy. Especially after he damaged a neighbour's garage door which he had to pay for the repair of!!!!!

Too easy to have a possibly terrible mishap.

Rosex
i wouldnt let the use it in the back garden to shoot at the nasty neighbours lol
That was a joke

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 23 Jul 2008 18:14

Depends on where he was going to use it.

I would personally encourage it to be done properly. An air rifle is no more dangerous than many other things - its just the connotations that go with it.
