John Report 19 May 2008 13:33

Hi Eldrick - why not everyone, as I say, under the circumstances I have mentioned, no one gets hurt.
They get to learn responsiblity, discipline, respect, a trade. And they don't have to fire one bullet...
And many young kids from good homes, apart from the poor homes, could do with some of the above.

Tory - If that is the case, then why are they not getting the 'treatement' from the government then maybe, and only maybe, we can forget NS..
But what the h'..ll chance have the kids got today to do anything.
So for me, at the moment NS is the only CORRECT thing to do..

Yes it should be a choice Devon Dweller .

National service never dun me no harm..LOL,
I was a deferred electrical apprentice and went in at around 23 yoa,
apart from other things, learnt radio communications, touch typing and morse code. got upto over 40 wpm..

silly bugger that I was after about a year in civvy street had an accident at work, chopped me fingers up a bit, so fast typing went out of the window.

but I Do agree that SOME portions of our younger generation need reining in and a bit of discipline wouldnt go astray.

So the young who are employed (and yes there are a lot out there) will be pulled out of work to do NS ?

If my child wants to join the military it should be his choice not forced upon him ...war or no war.

tory

tory Report 19 May 2008 13:23

why should the military do it what your saying can be done in civvy street

Let's just think - I had an apprentice like millions of other young lads, I could either 'break' my apprenticeship for two years and rejoin my civvy job at the end. Or, I could complete my five years apprencticeship, then do my two years NS.. No problem .
As I have already stated - these youngsters would not have to do any combatant work, and no Eldrick, they would not be delivery boys, they would be training to do a job. If then, as I already mentioned, they would like to make a profession with the military, then so be it.. no one is forcing these youngsters to go to war, if that is what is upsetting many.
But when they had completed their two years they would stand a much better chance of obtaining a worthwhile job in Civvy Street. And not some stupid YTS scheme.. And with that - I Rest my case..

National Service was designed and implemented as a way of keeping a reserve force trained and ready to defend our country, and not as some sort of tag on to the prison service.

Todays Military is a highly trained, highly skilled and very well thought of (generally) organization of young men and women prepared to lay their own lives down so that we can enjoy the freedoms and values that we have currently got.

There may well be a need for a National Service programme... but this should only be in the event of a national emergency, and should not be used as an offload and penal system for the flotsam and jetsom of society... and nor should it be used for all those millions of youngsters out there who have worked hard, learned well, and kept themselves out of trouble.

Boot camp is an entirely different thing though.... but it should be attached to the penal system and not the defence. By all means recruit ex military to run it... and offer opportunities for those youngsters whose lives are turned around by their experience.

But until or unless there is a national emergency... entry into our Military should and must remain purely voluntary and not forced upon anyone.

Otherwise something will be lost.

I personally dont think this is the answer - treating the symptom isnt curing the illness. You can throw as many schemes as you want at the problem....it wont work because there are always ways to get round it.

75% of the little drunken glue sniffing tack smoking trogs I used to arrest have got chronic health problems like asthma. Instant get out for military service.

The real problem is that the real problem is in the too difficult to deal with tray.

tory

tory Report 19 May 2008 13:10

I also did YTS and yes it was cr*p but that was down to the companies. As for the unenployed you will always get some that know how to play the system but not everyone on benifits is the same ,and no before you all jump up and down I am not on them .

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 19 May 2008 13:06

The question was do I think national service is a good idea

and in a revised form yes I do.

governments have tried YTS, yes did that £25 quid a week for sitting on a checkout learning jack sh*t and when you got to 18 they got rid of you because the government didn't pay the wages anymore.

Free computer courses for the unemployed, why only the unemployed why do they the get the free stuff and people who work get nothing.

To me it is worth trying what else is there to try?

tory

tory Report 19 May 2008 13:01

With that I agree Lorraine but why does it have to be National service in 2008 we must be able to come up with something better .

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 19 May 2008 13:00

if you are going to target the unempoyed or whatever - why pick the military?

Oh...whats wrong with having them picking fruit and solving the immigrant workers problem.....?

lol

The topic was national service - would pablo like to define what he means by national service and who should be included?

tory

tory Report 19 May 2008 12:59

There are Lorraine but few and far between as with most things alot depends on where you live

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 19 May 2008 12:58

Tory

what form of skills do they get watching day time tv.

there is no incentive for people to learn a skill if they are paid for doing nothing.

tory

tory Report 19 May 2008 12:58
