I am so sorry to read your story.

My dog was diagnosed with hip dysplasia last October and was given Rimadyl. She was ok for the first couple of months and then started being sick every day, as I had changed her diet at this time (for her to loose wieght to help the problem), I tried different things to see if it helped her, but she still was being sick so eventually I stopped the Rimadyl and this seemed to me to be the cause, so I haven't given it to her since.
After reading the above I am glad I did this now.

Just read this and I think our dog had a lucky escape last week then.
About 6 mths ago we had our 3 yr old staff sprayed she was given rimadyl for pain relief. No side effects and she was fine. Last week we had her 7 mth daughter sprayed, she came back from the vet alot worst then her mum did, very sleepy and crying in pain. We thought oh well she is smaller and probably hasnt got away pain free like her mum did. She was on half a tablet twice a day for 2 days but still crying in pain so when we took her back for check up two days later we asked for some more. These were given to us.
So really dont know if this was the rimadyl or just normal op pain.
I'm glad we just kepted on leaving it longer inbetween her having them as she stopped whining. But was that because she wasnt having them!!!!!!!!!! Something we will never know I suppose.

could everyone nudge,to keep this thread open for a few days,want as much info as poss for when i meet with vet in the next few days,with a bit of luck my vet might revue how they priscribe ritalyn or at least tell people of the sideaffects(one being death)so that we know what signs to look for.x

So sorry for your loss, they really do become family members with their little likes and dislikes.
My dog has pancreatic insufficency and thats a life long conditions and every time she seems off colour I panic so to watch your lovely dog have fits well its too horrific to think about my heart goes out to you Suzanne, big hug from me and Lillie

Suzanne, i don't know what to say but that i am so sorry for your loss of Tizer. I would like to thank you for being brave enough to put this thread up, i have two dogs and it will make me think twice about any medication from the vet in future.

Suzanne, I am so sorry to hear of the sad passing of Tizer and in such a traumatic way for you all. I think I would want to contact a newspaper about this, so that even more people can learn about the side effects.
Had you thought of doing that? Or contact Watchdog or a similar programme so they can look into it, the information will then get to a much wider audience and it may prevent other dogs suffering the side effects and families losing their pets in such an awful way.
I would love to have more pets but will be nervous of the many problems involved too.
I hope you can try to remember happy times with Tizer instead of the sad ones.

Suzanne, thank you for alerting us all to this Rimidyl; it proves that Tizer, and the other dogs, haven't died in vain as people are taking notice of its effects. Sorry, I'm not for one second belittling Tizers passing (God knows, it must have been devastating), just hoping you can draw a little bit of comfort that you've probably saved other dogs' lives by alerting us ....... you never know.

destructive behaviour and walking round in circles was one of the side affects of rimidyl,but as with any medication you will get some side affects.x

my bitch has been behaving very out of character--destructive behaviour despite the fact that she has never shewed or scratched before in all her 11 and a half years ,not even as a pup
She has also taken to going upstairs,going round the bedrooms as if she is searching for something.She has also taken a dislike to the fridge freezer--sometimes giving it a wide berth while at other times squaring up to it-----we have put this unusual behaviour down to some kind of dementia but it did begin shortly after she started taking metacam----she has become so bad that I have been giving her valerian at night to try and sedate her a bit otherwise I am having to come down to see to her--she has destroyed 3 doors and a safety gate to the point where her mouth and feet bleed--she also hurls herself at the door----the only upside is she can run up and down the flight of stairs now while just a couple of months ago she could barely get up the back step.
I am so very sorry to hear about tizer ,how traumatic for you all,not to mention heartbreaking.

I have sent this information to my friend who has two dogs and adores them.
when your vet, just like your doctor, gives you a prescription.... you take them blindly don't you?

I really feel for all of you whose beloved animals have suffered through this drug.

easter bunny,metacam is an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory.(Nsaids)the same as rimadyl,please dont be alarmed it doesnt mean it will have a bad effect on your dog lots of these anti-inflammatorys work very well,lots of pets have been given a new lease of life by taking these drugs.side affects to look out for include,
loss of appitite,
diarrhoea,
gastrointestinal bleeding(look for black faeces)
enlarged liver,
lethargy,
it does state serious side affects rare.xx

Sorry to hear about Tizer Suzanne,
We lost our dog Harvey (a Labradoodle) last month, we had to have him put to sleep so it was very peaceful if upsetting, its bad enough to loose them but worse when it is so traumatic.
I hope that in time you can all put it behind you and remember him as he used to be.

joanne,im glad you saw this thread before you gave your dog rimadyl,im not saying this drug will kill every dog that takes it,lots of dogs take this drug and survive,all im saying is please beware,check side affects and if you see a change in your dog,speak to your vet about maybe changing the medication,i didnt know about any of the side affects,when tizer died he was bleeding from the mouth,eyes and nose and screaming in pain during the seizures,he had stopped drinking the day before,but i thought he was having a bad day so i was giving him fluid from a syringe,if id known that they were all side affects of the drug,i would have stopped it right away.x

Suzanne I'm so sorry to hear of your loss of Tizer. I lost my pet lab Kim last summer to cancer, but I still have Kim's mother Judy. Judy is suffering from Athritis at the moment and rimadyl is one product I was going to purchase to help Judy. Thank God I saw what you had to say before I did.
