We might not of had po-go sticks but we did have stilts...........I could walk up and down the steps in the garden and go backwards on them.
I'll never forget the sight of my brother on his.He got me to strap him into his ( with roller skate straps and various belts) his plan to walk like a circus man on stilts didn't get far.........he fell like a young tree.........stiff as a board.......flat on his face!!
He didn't try that one again............lol

First Love
"A boy called Martin used to walk me home from our youth club (A Church one) was not allowed any other !!
And he'd stop in the park and say 'Shall we ?' meaning a kiss"
I wish I knew were he was now.

going off up the fields with bag of scabby sandwiches,,,paste or usually jam- (which I hate now) -----and bottle of lemonade made from that yellow powder stuf,,always saved a bit to dip with,,fingers all stained bright yellow,,,,,,,,

catching tadpoles,,,

anyone who had a bike was your friend,,,,

a bigger belly than a dustbin &drooling mouth thinking of all the things you would eat when you got home because you were starving,,,,,,

coming home with nettle stings.

scrumping in the Vicarage orchard,,,then throwing half away cause you couldnt eat it,,,,,

rope swinging across the river,,,,,,,,

feeding half the kids with homemade cakes,,

trying to make crisps and set fire to kitchen,,,,,

def carefree days ,,,,,,and no fear,,,,,and summer seemed for ever,,,,,

I remember being paid 6d to run up the road with a bucket and coal shovel - to pick up the droppings from the horse pulling the milk/baker/coal carts.

Making elderberry "wine" - crushing and straining them through an old pair of mums stockings. Running down the road with a friend to show his mum a bottle of "wine" we had made - and dropping it outside her back door. The stain was there for months.

Never heard of the jelly tokens, I used to collect the little paper gollywogs off the marmalade jars to send off for golly badges...there were lots to collect and were made from enamelled metal and really quite nice

"When I visited my aunt and uncle for afternoon tea,we would have either fish paste sandwiches, cut into triangles,or salmon paste sandwiches, followed by Libby's fruit salad with Carnation milk"
Oh it was such luxury !!
