Remembering William Hartnell

William Hartnell, the first actor to bring the Doctor to life, died 23 April 1975.

Hartnell's performance as the Doctor was an engaging mixture of grand-fatherly warmth and sinister scientist; the unknown and the childishly mischievous, suggesting at once a rebellious 'everyman' figure and an improbably old genius from beyond our time and solar system.

He retired from the role due to ill-health but in 1972 donned the Doctor's frock coat one last time to play the Time Lord in The Three Doctors. It was his final performance although the legacy and continuing success of Doctor Who means that 35 years after his death he continues to win admirers, fans and an audience who still follow the mysterious old man's voyages through time and space in a small wooden police box.

Yes, loved it. Can't wait to see what develops. What did you think of the ending though?

Joy

Joy Report 1 May 2010 23:16

I voted average because of the ending which I thought was right out of character. Otherwise I would have voted good.

It will be interesting next time with her fiancé in it :-)

The Doctor takes Amy and Rory away for a romantic break but terror awaits in 16th century Venice. What secrets are held by the House of Calvierri and who is the mysterious Rosanna?

In the videos below you can watch Arthur Darvill, who plays Rory, introducing the adventure or see dramatic moments from the story. We've a new jigsaw featuring the sinister Francesco and this week's Step Back in Time has the Doctor recounting a tale of ancient vampires. We've also got a gallery of images and don't forget that on Saturday, straight after the episode we'll be adding more behind the scenes videos and exclusive galleries.

I thought it was an interesting episode Joy :)

I couldn't make out the ending either, it seems quite grown up for Doctor Who. I think that there's more than meets the eye. I've been reading a few interesting theories on the Gallifrey website.

I have to say I am not enjoying this series as much as the last. David Tennant was always going to be a hard act to follow but the storylines are not as strong.

Hello Joy ~~~~~~

Good to see you first of all!!!

Yes I saw Vincent and the Doctor. It's one of my favourites of all time. I didn't seem to connect to the last few episodes but this one was fantastic. I thought the actor who played Vincent was superb and he even looked like him!!

SRS there was something in the way the new Dr hugged Vincent before leaving that made me cry, he finally caught that emotion that DT was so good at, there was 'truth' in it, which I hadn't seen from him up to now.

xx

There's a house on Aickman road with a staircase that people go up, but never down... To solve the mystery of the man upstairs, the Doctor must pass himself off as a normal human being, and share a flat with Craig Owens.
