All species have udders to nourish their young. In cattle, sheep and horses the udder is located between the hind legs as shown in the dairy cow diagram. An elephant's udder on the other hand is located between the front legs. Remember, dairy cattle have been selected for milk production and their udders are much larger and more developed than even the beef cow, which like the dairy cow has four teats and quarters to its udder. Sheep and Horses have only two teats and quarters to their udders. Hogs, because they farrow and raise litters of up to 15 or so pigs need much more udder space and it runs on both sides of the belly of the animal from the front to the hind legs, with as many as 20 teats. |
