Bristol town is doddle - the key is to be prepared for anything before it happens - cos I promise you it will. And switch off sat nav - it dosent understand the redevelopment!

Me too, as a child ran across a suspension in the Rocky Mountains at Capilano, no fear at all, then at 13 was stuck for 1 1/2 hours on top of a ferris wheel. That led to years of panic attacks, the inability to drive over a bridge with open sides, etc. When I was in north wales in 1994, my uncle was with me, I decided to take what looked like a shortcut between llangollen and trefor. All of a sudden I am on the narrowest road on the side of the hill. I was a wreck by the time I got to the other side!! Same thing with the Horseshoe pass. I now manage to drive over a local high bridge, but have to stay in the lane closest to the centre as I feel like I'm been drawn over the edge, same thing on a subway/tube platform, have to hug the back wall till the train stops. For a long time would drive miles out of my way to avoid that bridge, then one day had a flat tyre at the top of the bridge, and managed to roll to the bottom, white knuckles and shaking, feeling faint.

Bottom line is, enjoy your travel with confident drivers, my last time over, I was trying to enter Bristol and found myself heading for the bridge.Got mixed up with a motorway, which didn't head where I'd planned.
best wishes for a full recovery.

I'm like your grandad - petrified but drawn at the same time!! not nice

I can only see the bridge if I walk to the top of the hill (I should say the very top of the hill as we are already on a hill) and look over Shirehampton Golf Park.
Looks lovely when its all lit up.

My grandad had a fear of heights too and he had a sort of drawing towards the edge - how strange?

My Chiropracticers receptionists uncle designed and built (well, he had workmen who helped a little bit I expect) the first Severn Bridge.. He is dead now... he didn't fall off or anything... just thought I would pass on that useless piece of information, lol!

You would have to knock me out and tie me down to get me over the Clifton Suspension bridge, lol!!!

I don't like bridges, and I don't do heights.... which is why I bought a house on a piece of land which has been ironed out (if you are Welsh and a Gren fan, you'll understand that, lol)

ps, Ann, I promise to keep half an eye on the road ... the other will be closed!! xxxx

AnnCardiff Report 16 Mar 2008 22:04

I don't mind bridges at all, if I'm in a car - not too struck on heights though, I find I'm drawn to them in a sick sort of way

LOL Daff - I have a phobia of bridges - and I have walked the old Severn bridge and Clifton Suspension bridge. We always take guests over them if they have never been there and you will always find me doing a very brisk walk over and back and am relieved the bridge has not fallen down whilst Im on it LOL.

Ann - I am half Welsh so dont mind at all and well done Wales yesterday good game!

Barbara Windsor had this I believe a couple of years ago. I think it strikes after a virus. I am sure if they have caught it in time he will recover from it, although it may take a while. Lots of thoughts for him that he will get better soon.

I cared for someone with this a long time ago.. she was recovering, although her recovery was very slow. She did eventually make an almost 100% recovery (I had left the job by then, but used to see her every so often) although last time I saw her she said that she still had some weakness in her one leg... if she got very tired or had an infection of any sort, her symptoms got worse... don't know how she is now as I haven't seen her for a while.

If your cousin gets transferred to Bristol, I'll take you to visit him if you want... just ask, ok?

I hope he is feeling better soon.
