You are always on my mind, you, Stephen ,and all the others taken too soon and now being let down by people in power who could do something to prevent others going down the same road. You will not be forgotten and we will, with God's help, keep on bringing this preventable disease to the fore.

So the Government remain un convinced of the benefit of screening, See the following response to the petition that so many of us on here have signed:-

The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) offers the Government advice on all aspects of screening policy. In forming its proposals, the UK NSC draws on the latest research evidence and the skills of specially convened multi-disciplinary expert groups, which always include patient and service user representatives.

Whilst screening has the potential to save lives or improve the quality of life through the early diagnosis of serious conditions, it can never be a 100 per cent accurate process. Before the UK NSC can recommend screening for certain conditions, it must be sure that screening will reduce the risk of someone developing a condition or its complications. Each programme must be considered separately to see if screening is appropriate and there is a suitable test.

The UK NSC has advised that there is insufficient evidence to introduce a national screening programme for the most widespread inherited cardiac condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, for either the whole population or specific sub groups.

The UK NSC is currently reviewing the policy position on this topic and the result of this review is expected later in the year.

With respect to raising awareness, Chapter 8 of the Coronary Heart Disease National Service Framework, covering arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, was launched in 2005. As well as setting quality requirements and measures of good practice for the NHS, Chapter 8 has been successful in raising awareness of these conditions.

Perhaps with an election not too far away it should become part of the manifesto of a party (any party) to make screening a part of life for all young people. In due course political parties will be lobbying for our votes, we then must insist that they include preventative deaths via screening of our young people as part of their party policy and if they do not or will not then tell us the reason why...
