Ladylol Pusser Cat Report 28 Feb 2008 19:31

certain circumstances i agree a pet is a pet inbut if you have children you have to know the dog or even cats back ground , i think puppy farms bred only for profit like everyone else is disgusting and not fit for pigs, the goverment actually said to farmers in wales when they stopped milk farming, to use the pens for breeding dogs, and then in 1985 gave them a grant of 5000 to buy more breeding stocks, i feel really strong and support them being banned, you can usually tell a puppy farmer, the dogs are cheaper he will make excuses so that you can't see the parents and go as far as offering to deliver, ive seen the video on line and its so cruel, but as for breeders that let there dog have no more than 2 litters a year are doing nothing wrong, to me my puppy is my child, you could say humans should think of adopting before breeding themselfs.

i dont think bringing a dog licence back will work it did not before but i do think there should be a law brought out to stop breeders making such a huge profit they should be only allowed to charge a min fee for a dog maybe then it would stop the puppy farms breeding young bitches as young as six months some of the dogs i have seen with their teats stretched that they are nearly touching the floor all around the country rescue centre are saving ex breeding dogs some have never had human contact like being stroked or know a loving hand if the price of all dogs was set by the goverment and people could not make a living from breeding i think it would stop how for eg can you justify 1ooo pounds for a bulldog this is my opinion owner of three dogs two of rescue lilymoon

I'm for and against on this subject.. i'm a 3rd generation dog breeder and totally hate breeders for profit, dogs used to cost £150 for small breeds to £350 for larger breeds..
what is all this £1,000 + ???? and they are over breeding, my ladies every other year to give them a rest and stop at age 5 for dogs as it ages them......then nueter and plenty of love and cuddles
this is why we have unwanted animals, people not looking at what needs the breeds need and then dumping when the going gets tough... rescue centres are over flowing with adorable cutties and when anyone asks me which is best to buy i always say what you can afford to keep each week, never get something cause its the latest fashion and get what fits in your house, small house small pet...simple...
ooops i'm of again....sorry...

I do beleve in the dog license am I right it was quite cheep ? so perhaps it needs to more expensive where i live dogs roam around neglected and in a terrible state .they foul wherever .and we are fined for not clearing up .some bodies dog leaves a message outside my gate too .but I have animals i have just sold guinea pigs because I wanted to make sure people wre going to be responsible with them .Ialways end up with animals because folk lose interest in them hence the zoo in the shed. When i was young, (ohh thats going back a bit!)
My parents wanted a dog. They thought long and hard about which breed. We all went to Crufts and talked to owners/breeders. Trouble was mum wanted a small dog, dad wanted a gun dog! You guessed we ended up with a Cocker Spaniel and a Pointer!
Both bitches and fought like cat n dog sometimes!

I am with you 100%.
Iam a cat lover, and all of my cats have been rescue animals.
I even donate £6 a month to the SSPCA.
There is nothing wrong with buying a pedigree animal, if you do it for the right reasons. Not just as a fashion accessory!!
It is also a well known fact that pedigree animals can have more health problems, owing to close breeding.
With wee common mongrels and moggys, this is not the case. You will, however, get yourself a loving, loyal friend, if you choose to go down the common domestic route.

I will get off of my soapbox now.

I don't agree.

Rescue animals sometimes come with huge problems as a result of their previous owners treatment. You never know how they will react to things.

I have rescued dogs in the past but willl not do so whilst my children are young........ I prefer at the moment to have a dog from a pup where I can train them quickly and easily so they fit into my family home and become part of our family.

I don't see a problem with paying for a dog.... after all the breeder has had to pay stud fees, vets fees and spend time and effort cleaning up after them...... not to mention feeding them for 8-12 weeks.

I'm not against rescue and will do so again ...... I think it's a matter of personal choice. People who buy pedigree pups certainly aren't doing anything wrong in my eyes. When I got my Poodle 2 yrs ago she was my First pedigree dog in 30 years of dog ownership-all the others were either crosses or working collies or rescues..... her breeder cross examined me on the phone for an hour before I was even allowed to go and see her.......... THEN made me promise to tell her if I couldn't keep her for any reason (NO chance lol) as she insisted on having her back rather than her go to another home she didn't know. She was a VERY responsible breeder.... which I believe the majority are. As in most things....it's the minority that let the side down and give everyone else a bad name xx

I do love all animals and if you could see my home , its full of cats dogs, sheep, ducks ,hens and a goat.
But I did buy my two German Shepherds from a very good breeder ,who loves his dogs as I do prefer that breed of dog, but my Golden Lab is not a pedigree.
If I went to a rescue centre, I would end up bringing one home as would not be able to resist.
I think as long as you don't buy from puppy farms and think long and hard before committing to a dog or any pet, that is the main thing.
If people are sensible it would then bring down the amount of unwanted pets but sadly that will never happen.

We let our Lurchers mate.....poor Willow had one beautiful still born pup.....it was heart breaking.
We let them mate a second time....she had nine beautiful pups.
The kids learned a lot from having them in the home.......a good experiance for them.
We kept one ( Bandit ) and got Milo "done" so no more pups.
Several of the people who had the pups have kept in touch and sent photos.

Good point Maddie, i heard a vet on the radio saying that its a myth that you should let a bitch have a litter , then have her spayed. It does more harm than good.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 28 Feb 2008 19:04

it depends on what type of pet

you want

i used to bred and show Devon Rex cats

but only had one litter per year

in total not per cat

but still support re homing

of unwanted pets

and have 3 rescue pets now

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 28 Feb 2008 19:03

Well I think there is a for and against argument.

Personally all my pets are rescues and trust me I have a few!

But their care and attention comes foremost in our lives and I wouldnt have anymore as we are at max we can care for and give individual attention too.

However, I do feel some working dogs, like Labs and Spanials as long as bred responcibly and out of respect for their breds should continue - but I think its high time an animal licence was bought back before you could purchase a dog.

I do not agree with the let our cat / dog have a litter as its only fair mentality and all my animals are spayed or neutered.

I agree with you Roxanne!
there are far too many unwanted cats and dogs waiting for homes. I have a rescue dog and she is such a charictor, i cant emagine why anyone would want to dump her!
Also the films that prompt children to suddenly want a rat or a fish, last 5mins and then dumped! Grrrr!

I don't think it is the breeders at fault here.............if people thought carefully what responsibility a dog is before buying one, the shelters wouldn't be quite so full.

Shelters are also full of crossbreeds, so the breeders of pedigrees can't be blamed for that.

I will give you my opinion first, but I would like to know your views on this,Please keep it friendly,we are all going to have very different views on this:-))

I am 100% against it,I think its time this sort of breeding for profit was finished.
If people want a Dog/Cat whats wrong with going to the local animal shelter??
Until people stop buying breeds,Shelters will be full of unwanted Animals, this is just wrong in my eyes!

If you really love animals, think before you buy!!
