Well,Not In my Experience, and i have had lots!

The Breeding of Dogs/Cats for "Profit" is not acceptable.
only for certain working Dogs as I have stated.

Roxanne... as you say... you have seen how some of these breeders work.... but only some, not all!!

In all walks of life there are rogues and instances... many instances.. of malpractice!!... that does not mean that all should be arbitrarily tarred with the same brush!

The breeding of animals is no different.... the opening up of care homes, hair and beauty salons, or alternative therapy practices and even some animal rescue shelters (I have been in some pretty dire ones where I would happily have euthanased the entire staff)... there will be dreadful practitioners who deserve nothing more than to be locked up and the key thrown away.... but there are also many many more who provide loving, caring, nurturing environments for whatever *service* they are providing... and the same goes for breeders of dogs... these days, most aim for happy, healthy pups, and happy contented new owners.

Regards

An equally opinionated Daff.

I think it is a very good suggestion that puppy farms should be closed down altogether.

Whichever animal you choose, it needs to be fit for purpose - like your reasoning Daff.

All factors need to be taken into consideration but how can an animal raised in the completely uneducative environment of a puppy farm be fit for any position/job?

Home bred for a family dog - with children around if necessary and farm breeding for a working dog, eg, sheep, gun, etc.

It is simple common sense.

For those animals that unfortunately need to be rescued, where their owners die, as a simple example, then specialist rehoming organisations can and do help hugely.

The key is to know what you are looking for and to select that.

I've always had a mix... mogs, strays, other peoples' cast offs, re-homed, delinquents and a pedigree.. who was also rehomed with me as a delinquent... she lived with me for 13 and a half years, and I still miss her badly.... and my lovely two boys courtesy of our Puss!! Including these (my babies, lol), I have 5 cats.. the other three are elderly, and were rescue cats badly traumatised by their experiences.

I have spent over 35 years loving, nurturing and rehabilitating traumatised children, cats and dogs... the ones used and abused by society!!

It is extremely hard, and sometimes unrewarding, work!!

My next pup has to be very carefully chosen so that he or she will be able to have the attention from me that he or she deserves. This means I will have to be able to guarantee a certain disposition and temperament, and not leave it to chance... I would never be able to provide a border collie with the exercise and stimulation it needs..... so if *collie* was in a rescue dogs make-up, and I fell in love.... then I would be doing that poor creature no favours. I have a progressive ailment... sometimes I could walk for miles, others not far at all.

Puppy farms should be outlawed... but sensible breeding so that temperament/type is fairly predictable is an option that I think must be available.... I would dearly love to be able to fill my home and my life with rescue animals... I can't, so I sponsor where I can, support charities that help unloved and neglected animals and children.... and will choose a pedigree puppy whose temperament and needs are fairly pre-established as the next member of my family.

I make no apologies for this... I have not only rescued animals whilst abroad, but paid for them to go into quarantine, and brought them back with me. They lived full, healthy and happy lives... I am proud of that...and they gave me so much back in return.

But I really do resent the implication that if my next pup is carefully chosen for it's pedigree and breeding, and reasonably assured needs and personality, I am committing some sort of criminal act!!

How very presumptuous and self opinionated!!

Regards,

Daff.

Thanks for all your replies.
I didnt expect to get so many.

I have to say what really brought this thread on was a case today:-(

I know there are good and Bad Breeders, but my main concern is the level of bad breeders out there.
There are of course certain breeds that will always be needed, Dogs for the blind e.t.c!
But I really cant see why they Breed Cats! Some of these animals have huge health Issues too, which also makes me wonder why??
Thanks for keeping it friendly:-)
