with regardfs to puppy farms i think there disgusting,and i think most peeps on here feel the same.but i agree in breeding the type of dog that people require.
last year we lost our lovely shadow [black lab]to cancer.he was perfect in every way.placid ,clever,gentle,and so loving,and perfect around kids.we got him from a gamekeeper as a puppy,my hubby has a way with dogs,hes always said a ?????? can never have a good dog.and dogs havent got problems its the ???????? owners.we have never had a bad dog yet,not one,in 30 years we have had up to 8 dogs at one time.and loved everyone of them.last year hubby travelled to scotch corner from leicestershire to fetch our braid.and hes just like shadow,and looks like him too.so i agree with breeders.of the nice kind of course.

Our little cat like to be carried round like a baby with his paws resting on your shoulder so he can see everything.

Never stops sqawking - must be the siamese in him.

The only thing sparkling that his big blonde blue eyed brother does is walk backwards on the windowsill to get in when you open the window for him.

You would think that he could work out to sit the other way so that he could walk forwards wouldn't you!

its a very sad fact about staffies and yes they are a lovely breed

I've mentioned on a thread before Roxanne about how much of a baby the 18 month old dog is. When I'm in the bathroom he walks in and sits and gazes at you, I then have to wet my hands and rub them around his face, {that's his bedtime wash!}. Kiss the top of his head and say night-night, and of he toddles to bed. Who's the daftest or what!!!!

Forgot to say,that my brothers and my mothers have all had the Op,So No Unwanted Puppies there.Either;-))

I have 2 pedigree staffie dogs, male and female. When the bitch had her first season we took her to the vets for the 'op'. The way in which I viewed it she was bought as a pet to share in our family life and not as a money maker. The dog also had the op to stop him pestering the bitch. Even now 4 years later I still get stopped and asked if my dogs can be used for breeding. I don't regret anything for one moment, I have 2 spoilt and contented dogs.

Yes,Its a sad fact that Staffies are used for terrible things and they do seem to becoming a cult with some,its awful!
They are such sweet things too in the right hands, My Mother has one and my Brother has 3 all which were unwanted puppies,by a breeder:-((

It's the same where I live Steve....regarding Staffies......the local shop always has a "staffie pups for sale" sign somewhere on the notice board.
And if it isn't Staffies it's Husky pups.

I wouldn't say I supported the breeding of pedigree's, but I certainly have no problem with it.

However, non-pedigree's, especially cats, is pointless.

If people want a cat, go to the local shelter.

9 times out of 10, people who breed their own cats, and turn their queens into kitten machines become uable to control the quantity of cats they have, so usually they ed up in a shelter any way!

I think it should be law to have cats neutered!

And I should know, I used to work for Cats Protection!

I have to admit that opp north staffies are a problem young men in there late teens

are breeding them for no reason that i can see as most of the dogs have no papers so cant be reged with the KC

i think its these poor dogs that end up a lot of the time in recue

I don't think it's a black and white issue - like most things, shades of grey.

Puppy farms, irresponsible breeding for profit, breeding for agressive traits, 'accessory' dogs etc. - totally opposed.

However there are many repsonsible breeders. The breeds I and my family have had in the past are numerically small in the UK, not popular and haven't been bred to exaggerate features - in fact, they are still very close to the old 'original' standard and are the most wolf-like dogs. I have spoken with a breeder recently - she has a small number of litters and if any of her pups are sold, she will inspect homes and undertake rigorous inetrviews - if none of her pups are sold, she will keep them all as loving pets. If any of them are 'show' quality, fine - if not, they will still have a loving home. I would expect nothing less and would not dream of buying from a breeder who was less careful. The breeders of these types of dogs often introduce new blood from other countries, not just to improve the breed features, but to widen the gene pool and try to lessen occurrences of inherited hip or eye problems. Many people enjoy showing pedigree dogs and, as there is no big money in it, they must do it because they want to. I have been to lots of 'big' dog shows and never seen any distressed animals.

Our last dog was from the breed rescue, he had not been ill-treated but his owner was unable to keep him. He was my best friend for nearly 9 years.

When we come to get another companion, we will explore all routes, including shelters, before deciding.

Just as an addition, there was an article on the BBC website about lots of Staffies being abandoned - for various reasons - and the list of dogs at our local home contains about 60-70% staffies or staffie crosses.

yes google look at all the rescue center go to the dog foram pages see how many dogs are just on one page not just cross breed every dog you can name lilymoon

Does it really make such a difference what type of dog ends up in the shelter? A dog is just that and being dumped or left to wander the streets neglected is a terrible thing. Breeding dogs and cats should be regulated by law so there is not any left homeless or abused.

before i bought my husky i went round the local shelters and contacted the husky rescue and they had nothing suitable for children so as it was my choice and my money i bought one from a good breeder recommended by my vet at my mothers recommendation

all breeds have there own breed rescue and do a fine job as well, and all the funds are raised my thr breed club members ae they get no other finacial help

Poison acorns *as the animal shelters are mostly full of cross breed dogs * - unfortunatly that is a common misconception - Animal shelters are taking in thousands of ped dogs every year - please google 'Many tears rescue' - their rescued dogs are 99% ped!!!!! - We currently only have around 7 non ped dogs in our kennels - the RSPCA in Bradford had 50% ped and dogs trust has many many more unwanted ped dogs....

In my opinion unwanted ped dogs are dominant in the stray and rehoming centers around here, and most of UK too....

We have to disagree on this one - the reason there were so many health issues with a particular breed is because of the way humans have bred them going back and some - i do agree now though that these problems (created by humans) are being bred out.......
