Couldn't agree mor Lynda, it would be a shame for this thread to die.

When war broke out I wasn't even a twinkle in my dad's eye as he was over in northern France with the British Expeditionary Force...he was captured May 1940. He had a terrible time as a POW like thousands of others...but he lived to tell the tale.

We must never forget those who didn't.

i have only just seen this thread, and i have found it facinating i remember my mum used to tell me things about life during the war.

Hi mummo, just read your post, how very sad and it doesn't surprise me atall , as my dad was a P.O.W. in a German Camp in Poland, well actually he was in a few different camps and saw the cruelty that was inflicted on the Polish people by the Germans. The harshness and cruelty of them had to be seen to be believed according to my late dad. They showed no mercy to our British lads if they didn't tow the line, The Russians were treated so badly, subhumanly . Lot's of dreadul stuff went on.

I can understand your mum's reluctancy to talk about it. One good thing to come out of it was she met your dad.

Just found this thread, must try and read it from the beginning.
I hope you don't mind but would like to add my bit..........
My mum Was Polish, when she was 14 years old she was walking down the street with her friend when she was picked up by the Germans and taken across Europe to dig trenches for them, she ended up in Germany where she endured things that l couldn't even tell you about, l promised my mum that l wouldn't say anything about what she went through. Towards the end of the war my dad was stationed in Germany and was sent to the camp my mum was in, finding them wearing old sacks and the conditions awful, any way to cut as long story short they fell in love and so mum could come back to England they married in
St. Davids Roman Catholic Garrison Church,
Dusserdorf,
Germany.
And my mums address at the time of her marriage was :
Polish DP Camp,
Camp 753,
Karl Sevster Eller,
Dusseldorf,
Germany.

Mum and dad were married for nearly 50 years, dad died at the end of July 1995 and they would have had their 50th anniversary on the 26th of December 1995.
It still hurts me to think of mum never seeing her mum and dad again but she did meet her sister once more in 1978 when she came over from Poland.

Do you remember those dreadful pictures of Hiroshima after the atom bomb? How can people go to war after that.

Quiet on here innit ??

I was born at the back end of WW2 and my father who was in the commandos came home at the back end of 1946. I do remember walking eveyday with my mother and younger sister(in a pram) to get the daily rations. To this day I don't have a sweet tooth (probably because sweet rationing ended abt. 1952) because I'm doing my family tree I have managed to gather info from other relatives which I hope eventually gather and incorpate into my tree.
