I am sure many of you have read in the national press reports about the upsurge in violent crime on Britain's' streets.

I am sure just like me you have read these articles with a shudder and thanked a higher power that these violent crimes haven't affected you and yours. I hope that unlike me it stays that way for you, and you never have to deal with the aftermath of such a crime. Unfortunately for me it is too late.

On Saturday 27th January 2007, my dad, Mark Witherall came home from the pub where he had been watching his beloved Liverpool FC.

What happened after that is incomprehensible. A gang of youths made their way to his home intent on committing burglary, they broke in and in an attempt to protect his home my Dad found his way outside.

Once outside the house these teenagers hit him with his own spirit level and launched a terrifying and vicious attack which left my dad comatose. It was almost an hour later before 2 men found him and an ambulance had been called.

My Dad, Mark Witherall had emergency surgery to mend the artery which had been ruptured in his stomach he also had several CT scans and was admitted to intensive care.

Due to the severe brain damage , My Dad never woke up again.

His consultant told us that in nearly 30 years of practising medicine he had never seen assault injuries as bad as my Dad's.
