Hi - I've just been tracing the family right back from the 1851 onwards and I agree with all those above.

There was only one Charles Gannaway/Ganaway birth registration c1850 +/-5 yrs, anywhere in the UKi - and that was the Southampton birth. So it looks as though we are dealing with just the one person if the ages on the census are correct.

On the 1851 Census, Southampton:

Henry Gannaway 39, Ironmonger carpenter
Mary Ann, wife
Henry, 15
Emma 11
Eliza 6
Martha 3
Charles 7 mo
Thomas 1

1861 Census, 15 Manchester St, Southampton

Henry, 49, Mechanic, b HAMPSHIRE
Mary Ann, 46, b Dorsetshire
Martha 14
Charles 10, b HAMPSHIRE
Alfred 9, b HAMPSHIRE

So - you can see that Charles is stated as born Hampshire right from back then.

He then married Amelia Gross in 1872 in Hampshire Southampton.

The only death entry for Amelia that seems to fit her age is a death in 1898 aged 67 yrs, Lymington Hampshire.

So - that being the case, it appears that if Charles married in 1885 to an Emily Plummer , then he married bigamously. this could be why we can't find him listed on further census records - he may have been using a different surname for the census for fear of being found ??? Just a wild guess! (NB - I have a someone on my tree who was still married when he took up with another woman, taking his children with him and used HER surname on the census records rather than his own).

Anyway, I cannot find a death record for Charles Gannaway born c1850 either.

It's certainly a mysterious one isn't it?

Regards - Athena

On the 1871 census he shows Amelia as spouse although they didn't get wed until the following year. Did he marry Emily Constance Plummer when he still had a wife in Lymington just saying he was a widower?
On the 1871 census his parents Henry and Mary Ann were at 34 Manchester Street in Southampton. Henry was a carpenter and unmarried daughter Mary Ann was a stewardess on a steam ship. Can't seem to find Charles in later census

ok well thank you michael, i didn't realise it was that close to southampton. i found afew marriages for charles in southampton just thought i had better check before i ordered. i have looked for a death for amelia on freebmd and can't find one before 1885 when he re-married which is why i had counted them out. thanks for looking.

i'm not sure. where's pennigton? perhaps if it's anywhere near southampton it could be. that's the one gwyn found. i suppose if it's the only one about the right age it's possible. although she is an awful lot older than him- isn't that a rather large age gap?

Do you know for certain that Charles was the son of Henry and Mary Ann?

There is a Charles GANNAWAY ,22 cordwainer married to a wife Amelia, 44.
He is shown b. Pennington, Hampshire but is the only one I see of about the right age.

i know this is a big ask but i am totally baffled with it all.

my gannaway family are completely confusing me. on the marriage cert (1885) of Charles Gannaway to Emily Constance Plummer, charles is down as a widower, i have looked on freebmd to find his previous marriage but i don't know which it is as am not sure where he was living.

now i have a contact who has told me they couldn't find him on 81,91 or 01 census and also info that he worked on the cunnard ships however on his wifes death cert in 1897 her occupation says "wife of Charles gannaway-beer house keeper"

i wondered if somebody might be kind enough to have a quick look on the census to try and find him possibly in 71 census with 1st wife. his name was Charles Gannaway brn 1850 in southampton to Henry Gannaway and mary ann.

also a couple more look-ups if possible, if anyone is at a loose end/fed up of their own tree.

on marriage cert witness is william plummer, i would ike to find relationship to Emily Constance plummer. if someone could do a lookup for me possibly 61,71 or 81 i beleive she was born st. pancras to Henry and Ann plummer. i looked on 81 census and found a possible but ann is as a widower and if henry was already dead wouldn't it say so on her marriage cert.

their children seem to disappear on 01 census. if someone could attempt to find them it would be a great help. names

Henry C. Gannaway 1885
Violet C. Gannaway 1887
Beatrice L. Gannaway 1890
Sydney Gannaway 1891
Frank R. Gannaway 1895

i beleive they may have been living with a plummer of some sort.

i know it's a big ask ut any help on any of them would be appreciated. here's hoping atleast something comes up. thanks. Leanne :)
