My great gran was Edith Rose Stacey b 17 06 1901 her parents were John Stacey and Fanny Mansey.b 1869 and 1872. John and Fanny married 17 02 1892 and on there marriage and birth certificate it has his father as William.
The family were from the Farnham area and on the map there is a Midhurst not far from Farnham.

On the birth certificate at the top it says registration district Midhurst in the sub district of midhurst in the counties of Salop and Southampton.

William would have been my3 x great grandad on my mothers side.

No can see one that i would say was him sorry

If Mary Ann was married the cert would say

Mary Ann Stacey formerly ............. so it looks like she was single.

Confused by Salop and Southampton they are at opposite ends of the country.

How did you come to be researching him in the first play? Have you got him on later census.

His birth cert says he was born on 5 jan 1839 in midhurst and his mother was mary ann Stacey.

I have found more than one Midhurst on the map but my crtificate has the counties of Salop and Southampton on.

His mothers surname on his birth certificate is also Stacey so am not sure if that would have been a married name for her or her maiden name

Rebekah, was he baptised? If so, the parish records might tell you if he was illegit. Sometimes they say 'illegit of' some of them say base born or even bastard. Some just have the mothers name and in the occupation square 'single woman'. Parish records can be quite helpful at times.

As Reggie says, lots of illegitmate children "made" up a name for their marriage cert or used the name of their mother's subsequent husband, ie their unoffical stepfather

In this case no you shouldnt - Assuming the bc and the mc are for the same William, then you would have to say he made up a father when he married.

Have you checked the 1841 and 1851 census to see if there was more than one William?

I got his fathers name from his marriage certificate.

If the father's name is not on the cert, the child was illegitimate.

Where did you find out that his father's name was John?

If it was on a marriage cert, there is no guarantee of the veracity of the info..........many, many, 'fathers' are named on marriage certs for the sake of propriety.

I have a William Stacey b c1839 in my tree. I know his father was John but was unsure of anything else. I recieved his birth certificate today and it only had a mothers name on.
Is there any way I can be sure I have the right certificate?
