You're welcome, be sure to let us know what they think of it. I plan on visiting next year sometime and am quite looking forward to it... My paternal grandfathers family all come from Lowden and Corsham.

They need to check that the new facility that's opening in Chippenham has opened fully yet. I have people that I'm waiting to check out in Chippenham but they've been transfering from the old facility to brand spanking new ones. Last I looked in the summer they were still being built and due for opening sometime in October.

I was going to suggest that maybe the street wasn't actually listed as not all were/ or that it might have been a hospital or something. Mystery is solved though so that's no longer an issue.

Edit..... http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/access-to-records/wiltshire-and-swindon-record-office.htm

They reopen on the 31st Oct aparently.

Hi I just want to thank everyone again and confirm that Woodlands is/was Downing Street so thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction and William Stanley I believe is the Stanley I was trying to find.

After a bit of crossing out - Outlaws are now going to make a day trip to records office looking for the correct files. Thank you all again.

Thank you all again for your help. I am going to get more info from the paper records held in the family, but all of your efforts have been fantastic and I am sure will help tie up some loose ends.

I thought the house was in the family for some time - but I am going to double check I have not made an error there.

Just a thought, if births took place in Downing street could it have been a relatives house?

You're approaching this from the wrong angle. Why not just look up their names in 1901?

Here they are in 1901 in Hardenhuish.

You say that you have the family living there in 1890 is this from a certificate or are you thinking of the 1891 census?

Perhaps it was listed under the name that the locals knew it by. I work in Ware and if I were to ask the locals where East Street is I would probably get a blank look. However, if I asked for Back Street I would get directions to East Street.

If I was you, I'd want to get my hands on that certificate to see it for myself. I once got my OH to read a certificate out to me and his deciphering was no where near what it actually said

As an aside, if you google "downing street chippenham" the second entry is a planning application for no 38!

Thank you all for your help - I think a trip to the records office may be best on this one.

Maddiecow Report 21 Oct 2007 13:39

I did hear of a second mariage but I am not sure where that fits in.

See its the OH's parents trying to do their tree - thats why I am finding it harder as not in my tree.

They are hitting this brick wall over Downing street and I said I would try to help but am damned if I can find it.

I thought with the info I had it would be so easy..... but its like the rd went into a tardis!

Were all the children MERRETTs?...or maybe some were KINGs?
That's quite a few older siblings after a 1897 marriage.

So we need to find Susannah King in 1891.
Was her maiden name KING on the birth cert?

Mother Suzanna (or spelling variant) Merrett Father Frederick William Merrett son born at 38 Downing st Wiltshire 1901 Frederick David Merrick also older siblings Stanley, Len, Herbert and Olive.

Downing St is on the birth cert so they should all be registered or almost all under the one cencus but the Rd is proving a bugger bit its def right - as I have spoken to someone on the phone who recalls visiting the address many many years ago.

added a quick telcon confirmed the family would have been living there since before 1890.
