Andy has beaten me to it, I was going to suggest Ulph for Matilda's maiden name. My husband has some Ulphs from Norfolk (Tunstead and Honing parishes from memory). |

Unfortunately, still no marriage showing up :( Can anyone else have a look please as I have to get off now - it may be possible the birth is too early for reg and the marriage didnt happen or has been really badly mistransed. |

If you find that the Matilda Ulph aged 4 on the 1841 census is the right one, the family has been mistranscribed as Uffit on the 1851. |

Could be them, Mary and Maria seem to be pretty interchangeable dont they. We seem to be possibly doing ok on the maternal side but didnt Tracey want the info on John Austin's lot? |

In the 1800's an 's' was written as an 'f', so it could possibly be Huls or Hulls. |

Looks like John Henry Austin died Mar qtr 1892 aged 53, Chelsea district, ref. 1a 361 (Matilda was a widow on the 1901 census). |

Good thought Tom but I think its the sound that has confused the recorder - she has said Ulph and he probably thought shed dropped the H. |

POSSIBLE for John in 1851 - rightish area and he is shown as a plasterer's labourer, so a short step to being a house painter?: |

Oh and just to confuse matters LAURA COLMAN is apparently a cousin of some sort to RONALD COLMAN... the 1920's actor... but again wouldn't know where to look... |

I think we have covered that Tracey - it seems Matilda was very likely Matilda Ulph from Norfolk, as set out on the previous pages here. |
