Greeting's John

Knowing this child could be ABRAHAM
re 1851. census returns

So...... My mind could also make out the name Abraham although the upstrokes of the b & h are missing .or faint & the s could be an r
Thus making it Aaron. as Mary O' Italy suggested.

That's why I asked you if you required the scan of this event.

Doubt if the detailed trawl for a sound - a - like
would come to a successful conclusion.
Remember that you are looking at a persons handwriting which can be very hard to understand plus many put the name down as it sounded

Like two of the children's surname had been put down with a J = Jomkins.

Greetings Mike
Many thanks for additional comments.
I totally trust your integrity in analizing handwriting hence no scan requested, having transcribed many thousand census and BMD records I fully understand the problem. As far as ASURAN is concerned and having studied the various records my money goes on AMBROSE as the missing link, hopefully, case closed.

I'm trying to find out what happened to Elijah Conway b1852 in Leicester after 1891. He is listed in Leicester Prison during the 1891 census and after this date I can find no records, not even an entry in the GRO death registers (have searched up to 1950).

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you, Santa :-)

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 7 Dec 2007 16:10

Insomnia, I've had a quick look, and I can't find a death for Elijah, or a burial at Welford Road, which is the largest cemetery in Leicester.

Have you tried tracing his wife Catherine to see if that helps?

I found the following marriage - I wonder if it's Elijah's wife remarrying?

Marriages Sep 1898 (>99%)
Conway Catherine Mt. Harbro' 7a 64
Dawes Jane Mt. Harbro' 7a 64
Kirk Benjamin Mt Harbro 7a 64
NEAL William Mt. Harbro' 7a 64

There's a Benjamin Kirk in the 1901 census with a wife Catherine of the right age, who was born in Wigston, like Elijah's wife.

The children with them may be from Benjamin's first marriage - I don't have time to check them out at the moment, but you should find them easily if you have an Ancestry subscription.

If that's Catherine, then Elijah presumably died between 1891 and 1898, which makes it a bit easier to search for his death.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 7 Dec 2007 16:24

I might have found a clue.

I looked for all Conway deaths in Leicestershire between 1891 and 1898, and there are only 3: Frances aged 78 (Elijah's mother), a baby also called Frances, and this one:

Deaths Jun 1897 (>99%)
Conway Neil 40 Shardlow 7b 277

There's no matching birth for a Neil Conway.

Neil would have been an extremely unusual name in those days, so I would guess it might be a mistranscription. I've looked at the original image, but unfortunately it's typewritten.

There was a workhouse in Shardlow, which may be significant, as he might have gone there after being released from prison.

Although the age isn't exactly right, I would be tempted to get that death cert, or contact the register office and ask if they can check the Christian name for you.

Alan Report 10 Dec 2007 08:28

Hello Mary,

Thank you very much for looking up Elijah Conway in the Welford Road burial index for me. Your hunch about his wife remarrying Benjamin Kirk is correct as I know the family moved to this area in the early 1900s.

I am tempted to order a copy of the marriage cert to find out whether she is entered as widowed or divorced (although this may not be 100% reliable!)

The death for Neil Conway that you have found is definately worth considering as this is a really unusual name for the time. I am also considering asking for a search for his death at Leicester register office as I know sometimes records can get 'lost' between the local office and the GRO

Thanks again

Thank you very much for your help Mike, I don't know whether you could help me with a couple of more things.

Is there any more burials with Hamer Wells or just Hamer in the name at Welford Road between about 1891 - 1910?

And if anybody has access to parish records could you please look up the baptism of a Jane Hamer Wells born in 1895?

Thank you,

Vicky

Hi Mike

I could really do with some help - have hit a brick wall.

I am trying to find the ancestors (starting with the parents of:
