just had a look on 1881 census and there is a sarah a page b 1869 living with her parents james and mary page so that cant be my sarah.

as far as i know sarah was always known as ellen which was her middle name, 1901 census states her name being ellen silvey married with 2 children.

on 1871 1881 census she is known as sarah a page.

i have sarahs death cert, it says that she was born 28/12/1869 ,

mary jane birth was 1867 which is on 'free bmd' website
sarah was born dec 1869 so i would think that her birth would have been registered march qtr 1870.

Do you think these two might be the birth registrations of the first two girls, I cannot see one for Jane or Sarah, but can see the others as listed in the 1881 census.

do you know if they register a birth without a name whether they have to register a name to that person at a later date.
would'nt she need a birth cert to get married????

There are some PAGE registrations in Hailsham district on the freebmd site about the right time where the children are just shown as 'Female'.

Perhaps one of them is your ancestor.

If they weren't married when your grandparent was born and hubbie wasn't at home, you may find that the birth was registered in the maiden name

i do know that her parents thought that she was too good for him so maybe they had to wait till her parents had passed away to make it easier for them to marry.
shall have to checked her parents deaths to see if dates match

In my gg grandparents case, he was a widower on the marriage cert. I found a previous marriage for him & presume that he had to wait for his first wife to die, as divorce was too expensive in those days!!

Also, I understand that pension laws came into effect around that time, allowing widows to claim pensions.
