just had a look on 1881 census and there is a sarah a page b 1869 living with her parents james and mary page so that cant be my sarah. |

so this is them on the 1871 . I see that Mary Jane is called Jane on the census so maybe sarah has a reg first name too. |

Do you think these two might be the birth registrations of the first two girls, I cannot see one for Jane or Sarah, but can see the others as listed in the 1881 census. |

There are some PAGE registrations in Hailsham district on the freebmd site about the right time where the children are just shown as 'Female'. |

If they weren't married when your grandparent was born and hubbie wasn't at home, you may find that the birth was registered in the maiden name |

i do know that her parents thought that she was too good for him so maybe they had to wait till her parents had passed away to make it easier for them to marry. |

In my gg grandparents case, he was a widower on the marriage cert. I found a previous marriage for him & presume that he had to wait for his first wife to die, as divorce was too expensive in those days!! |
