again a common misunderstanding on the censuses seems to be,

census taker asks "where are you from?"

Person answers with where they last came from, not birthplace!!

I'm thinking that there was a lot of anti-irish in those times so he may have lied about being Irish in the later census I have

yep,

everyhting seems to fit, except James occupation.



Mind you, I did someone this mroning who went from

Master Cordwainer
to
Ag Lab
to
Colliery Banksman

on 3 successive censuses.


So not unknown to change occupations.

I think the Irish element has come ad a ditto from the entry above James on the 1851.

so was that laziness on the part of the census taker, lack of knowledge on the part of the person giving the information, or accurate?????

I've never seen this exact phrasing before!


On the 1861 Wales Census James is described as


Teacher of the 1st Rudiments of Learning




and Rhoda is Assistant do

yeah , what exactly does the 1st rudiments mean? I should now with a bit of luck find the birth cert of one of the other children to get the mothers maiden name

oz i have Rhoda's birth cert currently.

I would be tempted to go for the birth cert of James Nathaniel born 1842 in Plymouth.

I would guess the ABCs




or what we might call kindergarten or maybe the first couple of years of school.




which could mean that he wasn't actually fully educated (ie, university trained to teach latin, science or whatever).


so he could have had a change of occupation when they moved to Wales.


After all, who would know him in Llantwit Fardre??????
