HI anyone!

My gt grandfather James McCulloch was born in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland 3rd July 1864, parents Gilbert McCulloch and Agnes Ellis. He married Jessie (Janet) Richmond on 23rd December 1887 (my grandfather, Matthew was born 3 weeks earlier!Shock Horror!!) On the marriage cert, James was described as a soldier. The 1891 census shows Jessie and son Matthew. Jessie describes herself as married. In the 1901 census, Jessie describes herself as a widow. I can't find a death in Scotland for him. Jessie died in 1902 and her death cert said that she was MARRIED to James McCulloch (blacksmith). (Should it probably have said 'widow of '?) My grandfather married in 1912 and his marriage cert says ' father-James McCulloch, deceased. I have been unable to find a death anywhere in Scotland for him. I have also checked Boer War deaths and come up with ziltch. Does anyone out there have any other ideas? Please!!? I've been searching for 2 years now and have spent a fortune on Scotlands People!!
Thanks
