Hi Hannah this may come in useful i don't know.
But in 1901 census there is a Charles Bailey married to a Florence. It looks as though he died in 1912 which would fit in with Ida's birth her mothers surname would have been Rowley i wonder if a mistake was made. it would explain why she went into an orphanage.
1901 in Congleton 1912 in Nantwich.
Would that make sense.
Might make some sense if you get Ida's birth cert. if her mother was Florence would make sense of why she was in an orphange. Perhaps she made up an occupation for her father.
Worth keeping to once side maybe.
shame he wasn't a police man.

I don't want to send you on a wild goose chase, but have found this marriage in Northwich registration district (which covers Middlewich):-

Florence Bailey married Rowland Stubbs
June qtr. 1915, Northwich, 8a, 660.

A possibility that Florence was Ida's mother?

Sad news im afraid, apparently Billy died not long ago. His surname was stubbs.

Hannah

Hannah Report 26 Aug 2007 17:49

You both are so helpful!!!
I think that Billy's son actually lives in Congleton (the same town as me) so i might be able to contact him and ask Billy for help. He might know something.

Im afraid i dont know if sarah was older or younger but my dad says he just remembers sarah in sandbach. She could have had other sisters or brothers- im not sure if that either. Im pretty hopeless for information!!

So no real point in looking for William.
Most likely better looking for Sarah.
Any idea when she was born.
Have you thought about putting a letter in the local paper. William or one of hi family might see it and be able to help.
Right off for some tea will be back later see how you are getting on.

Oh, that is interesting. If you think that Billy is still alive you must have some reason for thinking this.

Is it possible that he could hold some information that you might be able to get from him?

If Billy or William was a step brother, then I don't think we are going to find him as he will probably have a different surname.

If you get the birth certificate for Ida (although there is no guarantee that it's the right one) then you would have her mother's full name and you could then look to see if there was a marriage for her and if you found one, you could then look for a birth of Billy with the surname of her husband.

Can't think of much else you can do at the moment.

I wonder if the sister Sarah is older or younger than Ida or if she was a sister or step-sister?

I think Billy/william is still alive. I dont know if sarah is alive but i doubt it because my grandmother died a few years ago and she was in her 80's.

Just to confuse things even more! - my dad thinks that Billy or william was Ida's step brother so i dont know how that one fits in!

Hannah Report 26 Aug 2007 17:32

Just spoke to my dad and he thinks that his mum Ida had a sister called Sarah Bailey.
He also says he never met Charles bailey and he was rarely mentioned so i think she may have made him up.
My dad does have a sister in america he sometimes talks to so im going to try and ask her for more info and im going to order the birth certificate.

Thanks for that Germaine, but explaining things and finding anything are two different things!!

As you say there are an awful lot of William Bailey's out there. Good idea about trying to find William's death, but I have a feeling Hannah is not going to know when that was.

Oh Kath youare so much better at explaining things than I am. I make it sound hard work.
Just a thought Hannah do you know what happened to her brother. Did he stay in the area.
Maybe if w can find when he died it may give a clue to his age so making it easier to check for his birth.
There is one heck of a lot of William Baileys out there with Baileys as the mothers surname. Just not found one in the right area yet. Plus she may have travelled out of the area to have him.
Didn't make life simple did they.

You could check with the Cheshire County Records Office to see if they have any records from local orphanages. I don't know if they are likely to keep these sort of records, but if they did they might have some sort of admittance records with details of family members.

It's worth checking anyway.

Between the 1901 census and 1912 when mother's maiden names were put on the birth index, it is quite difficult as you would have to look through the complete index looking for births with the correct surname in the approximate area, but there would be no way of knowing if these were the same family.

Once the mother's maiden name is on the index then you look for the correct surname and correct mother's maiden name and hopefully they will be the same family - but again you need to buy the certificates to be sure.

Hannah Report 26 Aug 2007 17:04

Thanks Germaine! That would be great.
I think you and Kath could be right- she used her grandfather's name. I will order the certificate and see what that says.
I dont have any ideas about the mothers possible name- i will ask my dad again but he says that he never saw his mothers parents and that she never mentioned them (maybe thats a clue) apart from to say he was a policeman and thats all.
I think im probably going to hit a brick wall here aren't i!

Yes Hannah but the mothers maiden name only shows up in teh last quarter and after 1911.
Though to be perfectly sure you would have to get cert.
I will make a start on the BMD for you.
10 mins then off to tea so will be back see how you are going on.

I think you could be right there Kath. Thanks.
One other quick question, is there a way to find out if a person had brother and sisters if they were born after the 1901 census?
