Does anyone know of Ernest Mann -Leicester born 1900/01 to Walter James Mann & Ada Mann (nee Rutter)? When did he die? Did he have any brothers/sisters? OR his children? Edna 1923/Ruby 1924/Muriel 1925/ Alexander 1930? - (any others)? Ernest's Dad, Walter, was my grandad (by his 2nd marriage to Annie Kilby (nee Fowkes). Does anyone have any info that could be of help to me about Ernest/Walter or their families please.

Thank you so much Bev - you have however, revealed another mystery - as my gran Annie Kilby (nee Fowkes) had a son, Robert Kilby in 1917 - 3 yrs after Herbert, her husband died (?) - I know that Annies daughetr Irene( my mum) was born in 1922 and Annie married Irene's father in 1927 - Walter Mann. But who then was Roberts Father??? ps -please excuse my ignorance, bu t who is Mike?

Thanks Bev What info will show up on a death certificate? how can I check to see if this IS him? It may not be him as my gran had a child 1st qtr 1917 Robert Kilby . How could this be? unless Robert (like my mum-Irene b1922), was Walter Manns child also. How can I confirm any of these details? will there be other records that can be cross referenced anywhere?

Wow- Thanks to the kind generosity of others, I have found quite a bit of info: It appears that Annie Fowkes married Herbert Frank Kilby in 1909 - no idea when he died ( anyone know)? I know of 4 children ( probably there are others-anyone know)? Dec1911 Leonard Kilby, Dec 1913 George Kilby, 1st qtr 1917 Robert Kilby, July 1922 Irene Kilby (my mum) Irene was enterd on the birth regististrations as Irene Kilby, then in 1934 Dec- re-entered (handwritten) as Irene Mann (?). was my mum addopted by Mr Mann? were any of Annies other children adopted as a 'Mann' ? Did Annie re-marry a Mr Mann? - if so when? When was he born /died? what happened to Herbert Kilby? Did Annie have other children? Whooo are they? Anyone willing to help sove the mystery please???? Thank you

Can't find a Mann-Fowkes marriage in 1934, and it takes ages to look through the Ancestry full index. I have to do some work now - does anyone else have time to have a look?

Hi Gillian,
I've made a start on solving the mystery.
I've found two birth registrations for your mum.
There's a handwritten entry at the bottom of the page in the 3rd quarter of 1922 for Irene E Mann, mother's maiden name Fowkes, registered in Leicester. The GRO reference is hard to read, but I think it's " 7a see D. '34 " (presumably a reference to December 1934).
Then there's a typewritten entry in the 4th quarter of 1934, again for Irene E Mann, mother's maiden name Fowkes, registered in Leicester, reference no. 7a 250.
My guess is that your mum was originally registered under another surname, Annie married Mr Mann in 1934, and your mum's birth was re-registered under his surname. Not sure whether she would have to be formally adopted to do that.
Are you sure Fowkes was Annie's maiden name, or could that have been her first husband's name? I'm wondering because I can't find a birth in 1922 for Irene Fowkes.
Now looking for a Mann-Fowkes marriage around 1934.

Fowkes / mann Family - Leicester
Hi am trying to trace my mothers (now passed away) family. Especially, I am trying to find out about my grandmother, her husband and her children ( my aunts & uncles). I have looked on the obvious web-sites, but am struggling. I know that My grandma was born Annie Fowkes 12.02.1892 in Leicester & died 4th qtr 1971 in Leicester, I was 12/13yrs old. She had several children including my mum, Irene Mann ( so she must have married a Mann). My mum was born 13.07.1922 and died 19.10.1977. I recall my uncle Len, Leonard Mann/Fowkes, who I believe was possibly older than my mum. He lived in Leicester all his life and I know had a son/sons and very liitle money as he was living in 'digs' I remember that he enjoyed grayhound racing! My mum told me that he was her step-brother(?). I remember visiting once, an aunt who had several children including a daughter about the same age as me- somewhere also in Leicester/shire. I also remember Syston being mention, but know nothing of a family conncetion here. Can you/ anyone offer me any advice / help at all? I have hit a brick wall. Thank you

Hi Mike
I was wondering if you had managed to find anything on my ancestor David Robinson. If you are unable to please don't wory.
"Hi Mike
I am trying to find David Robinson born in Leicester in approx 1827. From his marriage certificate to Jane Bradley 21/8/1848 in Parish Church, Dewsbury, York it says his father is John Robinson and that he is a soldier. David is down as a traveller. I have been unable to locate a baptism for him. There are two David Robinsons born this year in Leicester. For information he was blind in one eye and on the 1881 census he is down as blind and a photographer!!!
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks.
Lorraine"
and your reply
Greeting’s & Welcome Lorraine…….
Nothing showing up……… just yet
Having tracked him back 81. through to 61.
Just wonder why his surname changed on the 1871.Census To..... Robinson ~ Welsh ?
If his Father was a Soldier then I need to checkout the Parish Registers for St. Mary’s which the Barracks came under. Unfortunately my St. Mary’s Baptism resources only go up to 1820. So it’s down to a Records Office search sometime this week. I’ll report back on this thread which ever way it goes.
