The GRO Records (Births, Marriages and Deaths) have been kept since July 1837. These indexes to these can be consulted at many large libraries, County Record Offices etc. There is also an excellent web site called FreeBMD at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ that is in the process of transcribing all the indexes and putting them online. For events ealier than July 1837 you will have to consult the Parish Registers for the parish in in question. Many of these have been microfilmed and are either available for viewing at the County Record Office in the local area or through the LDS (The Mormons) who have Family History Centres in, or near, many UK towns. Additionally, the LDS have transcibed many of these registers so that you can search online at http://www.familyhistory.com/ You should also be aware that not all Parish Registers still exist, lost, stolen, destroyed, pages re-used etc etc.
