When I started 2 years ago I had practically no info past my grandparents. Obtaining certificates (birth, marriage, death) is the best way to get started. This gives you a lot of information such as names addresses and ages to get you pointed in the right direction. Also the census information. Once you get an address you can check the census records and get more family information. Once you start you get hooked.
