The best tip I can give anyone is to join your local Family History Society. There is at least one in every county and when I joined in 2001 I took a beginners course which really set me off in the right direction. On the web look at genuki.org.uk web page which has lots of reference info for budding genealogists (use the search to find names & places). Buy the monthly magazines on family history such as 'Family Tree Magazine'or 'The Family History Monthly' which have articles, info on the record offices, letters pages and even a computer section. The best advice I was given was NEVER ASSUME. If you find info on the net then it needs to be double-checked and confirmed on the PRO indexes, census, etc. etc. Keep a note of where you find your info in case you have to go back to it. There is a lot more to this 'obsession' than meets the eye and a lot of time and patience is needed. I love it! I am now a grandmother & retired but I have learned more about history & geography than I ever did at school all those years ago. Happy hunting. |
