To Margaret Ward; Suzanne Paris Checked out the 1837 online site and it looks very interesting. Nevertheless we still need to know which Register Office to apply to in order to get the certificates as each area has a Main District which includes sub-districts. The cost for a full certificate is £6.50 and increasing to £7 in April. An example from the site: September quarter 1868 Bowen, Thomas.........Cardiff..11a 267 That means Thomas Bowen was born in either July, August or September 1868 in Cardiff. BUT Cardiff has a main district and 4 sub districts so it is necessary to state in which area of Cardiff Thomas was born in order to help the staff to look in the correct registers - not all the register offices are computerised yet. Remembering, too, that although the Register Offices are very helpful to us genealogists their main job is to register the births, marriages and deaths of the population. There is an easier way, but costlier. The reference number on the index is only relevant to the Office of National Statistics (ONS)in Southport where you can apply by post. The cost at the moment is £8 if you give the ref. no., but that will increase in April and if this site is popular there could be a very long wait for certificates - even longer than now.
