Rosi Carpenter Assuming you have looked for his birth in the GRO birth indexes around 1844 and not found him, it's worth knowing that until 1875 there wasn't a penalty for non-registration of births and in some parts of the country it's estimated that as many as 15% births went unregistered. Also his age on the census might not be correct, so take 1844 as a rough guide. The Hugh Wallis site is such a boon, but unfortunately the IGI doesn't cover all baptisms. I suggest you contact the relevant Record Office that covers Bermondsey and find out which church registers they hold, to see which aren't indexed on the IGI. |
