Hi everyone Following my plea for help the other day a number of you came up with some good suggestions for tracing family pre 1837. One very kind lady e-mailed me, and whilst she didn't actually solve my immediate problem, she did give me a GREAT tip for the FamilySearch site. If you find a record of an ancestor's christening (Eg my SAMUEL WILKINS was christened in March 1837 at St Mary's church, Lambeth, London) go into the record, which will show parents, and scroll down to the batch number. If you click on this, it takes you to the International Genealogical Index; where you just type in the surname, in my case WILKINS. Up will come a list of all those people christened at that church (within a certain timescale) with the same surname. Click on all these names, and all those with the same parents are obviously his brothers and sisters!! Hey presto a list of siblings which I would have had lots of trouble tracing, if ever. By doing this, I have added a total of 7 siblings to three of my GGG Grandparents, in about 5 minutes flat! This is such a great tip, and I know there is another one for getting info. from the 1901 census without paying. However, new people to this site would not know about them. I'm going to e-mail the Genes people to ask if we can have a 'Tricks of the Trade' board. What do you think? Thanks again Kathy, you know who you are. Suzanne Orpington Kent |
