Samantha, It was common practice to refer to a son or daughter in law as a step child. You just have to keep an open mind when looking at the info. Most ordinary people couldn't fill in the schedules because they were illiterate and the enumerator did it for them. So the accuracy depends a lot on the enumerators and they made mistakes! I think the info then had to be copied into books which were sent to the registrars for checking and then on to the Census Office in London. I found my G.GF. on 3 census forms with a different named wife on each but it turned out to be the same woman and not a well kept family secret! Not all householders took the census seriously either - I read somewhere that a child was entered as a 'marble player' and "Dick the Canary" was added to one schedule! Keep sane, Beryl.
