Hello Mary I know you are looking for a free site for searching Scottish records, but I'm not sure there is one. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is excellent, although you do have to pay, but it has a search facility so is much better that the 1837online site for England and Wales. Also, it has the census for 1881, 1891 and 1901, so if you have a lot of Scottish relatives, you will get a lot of information for less than £10. You save on the cost of certificates too, because you can view the actual entries in the registers and print them off. I just wish I had more ancestors from north of the border!!
