On my great great great grandmothers birth certificate it says that her grandmother registered the birth. It lists the grandmothers address as BRIXTON IN ATTENDANCE. What does this mean? Was she a servant? Thanks for reading, -Kat |

I think that all it means is that the grandmother's usual address is Brixton, but that she was present at the birth, wherever that took place. |

Like brian, i would suggest the grandmother was in attendance at the birth, perhaps helped deliver the baby, many women left their normal houses and went back to mum or grandma to give birth. How have you got back so far- you should be giving us tips! You have got back 7 generations!Well done! |

I stumbled on a good explanation for this on "Barbara's Registration Web Page" which was a link from the free BMD's site information pages. It is obviously written by a registrar and has tutorials on birth, death and marriage certificates. These highlight where and how discrepencies can arise. It also gives an outline of the law regarding registration and how it has changed since 1837. |

Thank you! I will visit the FreeBMD site, but think that Brians is the most likely suggestion. -Kate |
