Please can anyone help me with a suggestion where to look if you find out that within your family someone seems to have been adopted, I have found this out as I cant get a birth cert under the assumed name, so as this person is a family member I can onl;y assume they were adopted but dont know how I commence from here, so if anyone can help me with an adoption site or something it would be great it is for the years from 1886 to 1908. Thanks

I went to St Cathrines house in London where there was a register for adoptions. This was a number of years ago so don't know if it is still there- anyway find out where all thre registers for births, deaths etc and they may be able to help.

I went to St. Catherine's Hse too some years ago, but found it difficult to navigate my way around so basically gave up. Try a different approach such as phoning Government/department 'enquiries' relating to adoption. There should be a way of homing in on someone's adoption certificate, such as date-of-birth/place-of-birth etc.. I was adopted in 1962 and I knew the Court that supervised it. I then approached that Court and enquired about my details. Worth a try. Joe C.

I work for an adoption agency in Manchester and we get enquiries from people whose parents were adopted in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We hold records for many mother and baby homes in the Manchester area from the late 1800's and our own adoption records from the 1940's. Any enquiries we receive regarding adoptions before that are advised to contact the GRO at Southport or Social Services in the appropriate area. You shouldn't have any trouble getting info from so long ago although in the case of more current adoptions info cannot be released to anyone apart from the adoptee themselves due to the adoption act 1976. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

My gran was born in 1907 and adopted when she was about 18 months old. Although this was done through a solicitor I don't think it was classed an a "adoption" so your relative may not have the "correct" adoption papers. C Salisbury S Wales
