Yes have tried 1837 online. He either wasn't registered or Riley was not his real name. Strangely enough his son wasn't reg. either but his daughter was. I have even tried his brother with no joy. John

John, Don't give up on finding your relative. I spent 2 years tracing one of mine, I found him in the war, I found him dead, but I could not find him being born, then a few weeks ago, hey presto! he was on bmd BORN, after 2 years, a result, but only to find he had no father!!!!! Ah well, back to the drawing board!!! Good luck in your hunt, this is not a hobbie for me anymore, but an obsession!

Ok I will try widening the age. It's just that all the other info I have, 2 census + marriage cert. all tie in together re age. But I will spread out a bit. Anymore tips? John

Hi John, A voice of experience. Don't trust the date you have for grandad's birth. Have you searched BMD for later years, he could have been younger than you think. Don't forget He might have been down the Pub on the night of the census and his wife made a mistake? And sometimes the Census takers put the age to the nearest 5 years, and under 5s as 1. Good luck, Jim

Re 1827 online etc: I have tried all Bmd for 1870 to 1873. Even checked for death from 1901 to 1941 so far for death. Trouble with 1871 perhaps he wasn't born then? It might be an idea though to contact Bradford FHS but not sure if there is 1. The reg office there couldn't find him though from 1870 to 1874. Appreciate the help though. Any more suggestions? John

John,I know how frustrated you're feeling, I have a similar situation with my Grandfather, I have his death certificate and his marriage certificate, he also appears on the 1881 census and the 1891 census, but I cant find his birth. After struggling for nearly 12 months, I have decided I'm going to ask the local Family History Centre if I can hire the 1871 and possibly the 1861 census from them,(he was born circa 1856)I understand the costis only something like £2.50 a month. Failing this maybe the Family History Society of the county he was born in. I hope this may give you ideas where you could go next. Good Luck! June,Preston.
