After weeks of e-mailing long shot contacts, one finally paid off today. I know this isn't really a tip, but iwanted to share it with you all. I still have a long way to go, but that is one more bit sorted out with the help of GC. Here's where i need the help, on the 1881 census i have 2 people listed at the same address, one is classed as invalid and the other is classed as ((invalid)). Is there a difference and what do the brackets mean? Thanks in anticipation of your help Sarah |

Hi Sarah The brackets may not mean anything really. I take it you looked at the 1881 census on the family search site. If you can give me the RG11 ref I shall look on the CD set to see if there is anything different. Nice when we find something, isn't it? Vera Bromage, Manchester |

Sarah The word ((invalid)) is noted under the person's occupation and NOT under the additional heading of Disability (which is shown at the far right hand side, is necessary). There is another word in double brackets in another part of the census- ((Scholar)) - under the occupation of 2 year old child. Would he be a scholar attending school at that age? I think it means that what the transcriber saw on the census page was not correct and they put 'invalid' with the emphasis on the 'va'. In the notes on the CDs they did correct some things. Not sure about the double brackets, can't find an explanation for them. Vera B, Manchester |
