The census only gave the correct age of children - the age of adults was rounded up-to the nearest year, usually in five year increments, so, the person you found is most likely the person the person you seek - try cross referencing the census details with any known addresses at that time! Good Luck!

First bear in mind that the Census was taken in April, not on the 1st Jan. Secondly, there are all sorts of reasons why incorrect info appears on Census returns. Anything from outright fraud to a tired census taker. The only (generally) reliable source is always the original record Certificate or Parish Register. Jim, Gosport, HAM

Hi, can anyone advise me please?! I traced my great great grandparents, Frank and Sarah Butterworth, via the 1881 census and then using this information tried to trace their marriage on freebmd. I found a Frank Butterworth then tried to find a Sarah on the same page. The result was a Sarah Kent but her birth record showed a years difference (1853 not 1854). Can anyone advise or could it be likely she lied about her age or have i got the wrong person totally!!! Help
