I had a similar problem when I couldn't find my G Grandad on the 1881 census. I knew he was born in 1878/1879 from the 1901 census, but could not find him anywhere. I eventually managed to get his birth certificate(using 1837 online), and tried searching for his mother instead. I eventually found the family, and the reason that I couldn't find him before was because nothing had been entered against his name other than his age. No birthplace, admin county or anything, so he never came up on any searches! I am sure I am not alone! Maybe there is another route you could take to get a different relative to search on? Regards Maxine

Thanks, I have seen Geoffrey but my Geoffrey was Elias' Dad meaning he must have been born about 1870 or before. However I will keep him in mind as he could be related, somehow. I think the family name must be Hulme but I have no firm evidence.I was sure that Elias would have been on the 1901 census as he should have been about 10/11 then, but nothing, it is so frustrating.

I expect you have already seen this but there is a George (43) and Agnes (45) Hulme living in Rose Grove, Ardwick, Manchester in the 1891 census. They also have a son called Geoffrey aged 5. Regards Gary

My Grandfather born 1911 had two sisters and two brothers, they all have variations of the same surname. One great uncle is Hulme the other is Shaw Hulme, Both great aunts were Hulme with Shaw as a middle name. There father was Elias Shaw Hulme but the Shaw could have been the middle name again. I know Elias was born 1890 and his father was called Geoffrey Shaw Hulme. They lived in Hulme Manchester. I have one certificate to prove the above- the marriage certificate of Elias and his wife Sophia Horsefield. However there is no record on the 1901,1891,or1881 census of any variation of these surnames. Where do I go from here. Ialso know that Elias had two brothers and one sister but I can not find any mention of them either. HELP! It's driving me mad, Jackie
