Can anyone give me advice please. Trying to find Shoreham-by-Sea [West] Sussex, on 1901 census without success. Tried all morning. It does exist, and predates 1901, so I am probably searching wrong. Can anyone put me right? Badger Bill Worthing

Have you tried using a wildcard search?i.e using Shor* or even just Sussex? Regards Maxine

Hi Maxine Thanks for such a prompt response. I have tried all the permutations of wildcards that i can think of, to no avail. I think i must be doing something wrong with my entries. Badger Bill Worthing

Hi Alison Thank you. Will give that a go - i had been putting permutations of Shoreham as well - never thought to go for just Sussex. Badger Bill

I had no problem finding Shoreham, New Shoreham or Old Shoreham. You need to know the street you are looking for. As I did not have one I typed BA* and it gave me results. I assume you are using address search? Regards Gary

It is always better to use wildcard searches in the 1901 Census. Unless very common names and you need to limit numbers. I usually search on "lanc*" rather than "Lancashire" because Lancashire can be entered as Lancashire, Lancaster, Lancs etc. Martin Briscoe

I always thought it was a mistake to knock down that big chimney at the Shoreham Docks. Who knows what sort of Agnesses that could have released on Sussex. I have a daughter living in Brighton, and the last postcard I got from her was from Gibraltar!!!! Jim; Gosport, HAM
