Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. I amputting names in the census but it is coming back saying no results. I have downloaded the census decoder, but not getting any where there, I did search for a name last week and it came up, typing the same name and details this week after I have attempted to download the census, has not come up with anything From Sue...

Don't forget to try the names of any areas of the town - the county can sometimes give too many matches with a common name. My family come from Bolton so I sometimes search on Sharples, Halliwell etc - these are all different parts of the town. Use of the census decoder programs and once you find a possible match then try searching using the exact same word for the "Census Place". You might find the rest of the family. This can be especially useful if the place name has been mispelt or written in an unusual way. Martin Briscoe

Hi Sue I've sent you a pretty lengthy (and fairly dull I'm afraid) email on this, hopefully it will help. Thanks for the flattery Nichola - it works every time ! lol. Personally speaking, the main benefit for the decoder is not necessarily the money you can save on fruitless enquiries (although that helps) but the fact that it pulls all the searches together in a useable file, for me that has been invaluable. If anyone finds a similar tool for the 1881 census, please let me know! I know that one is free, its the sorting tool I'm interested in! regards Maxine

The big advantage of the 1901 Census Decoder programs is that they extract two fields from the page - PageID and PersonID. If you then sort on these it will group households together and also the occupants in the order that they appear in the census. i.e. probably Head first, followed by wife and then children. It is not foolproof - there could be a child with a different surname from a previous marriage etc. Also the PRO changed the system earlier this year to try and limit the usefulness of these decoders (though they deny it!).
