William and Pamela Thanks for your help. I have checked on a site that Vera posted which gives place names and found Beighton in Derby. Terry I have replied to your email with the web address. Thanks again. Lynne |

Dont forget that they keep reorganising the boundries for counties and administrative districts, you need to know the date and geographical location for the place and then check where the county boundries were at the time, they will almost certainly be different to the current ones for anywhere in `marginal' land (eg Middlesex now absorbed into London, the Greater Manchester area absorbing bits of Cheshire and Lancs, Humberside, Cleveland's brief existance, wherever) |

on the 1901 site, I also have a possible relative born in Brighton (Beighton) Derby. See my earlier message. I'm still trying to find out if Beighton was part of Chesterfield as according to the Freebmd site, Chesterfield was his place of birth. Terry - Gibraltar |

Beighton is near Rother Valley, the river Rother being the one that flows on to Rotherham and gave the name to the town. I believe Beighton is just inside Yorkshire but very close to the Derbyshire border. Helen Smith, Sheffield |

Thanks for the correction Caroline. I have found the Christening records of Ellen and her siblings on the IGI and it says Beighton, Derby. Just to add to the mystery! Lynne |

Sounds like a very mixed up certificate. The 'main' town of Brighton is in Sussex, not Essex. There is a Brighton in Derbyshire though - tiny place near Hartington, which was in the district of Ashbourne (according to FreeBMD)- could that be it. Not sure about the counties of Herts & Berks tho as I don't think these counties even share a border (pretty sure buckinghamshire is in between) |

My GGGrandmother's birth cert (1853)states that she was born in the Registration District of Rotherham, in the Sub-District of Brighton, in the Counties of Herts and Berks. I always thought Rotherham was in Yorkshire and Brighton in Essex. However, on the 1881 census it says she was born in Brighton in Derbyshire. To add to the mystery it looks like her parents were married in Portsea Island, Hampshire. Does anyone know whether there is another Rotherham (or was in 1853). Thanks in advance. Lynne Sale CHS |
